It is with profound sadness that we convey the news of Sam Craig’s passing on Friday, February 17, 2017 after a courageous battle with emphysema. Sam was predeceased by his parents, James and Jean Craig; his brothers David Logan and Jack Craig. He leaves behind his loving wife of 62 years, Cathy; son Rick (Clare) Craig; daughter Karen (Wayne) Tobacca; five grandchildren: Michele (Chad) Walls, Brian Tobacca, Kristy (Richard) Ethier, Caitlin Craig, and Eleese Craig; four great grandchildren Sydney and Gracie Walls, and Ben and Ava Ethier. Sam is also survived by his brother James Craig Jr.
Sam was born and raised in Cumberland and met and married Cathy Frew in 1955. He worked for 38 years as a pipefitter at Elk Falls Mill in Campbell River until his retirement in 1993. Sam was an avid sports fan; he loved his Montreal Canadians and St. Louis Cardinals. He played on many sports teams over the years including the Bevan and Old Timers soccer teams and the Cumberland Luckies and Somerville Trucking softball teams. Sam also enjoyed bowling and golf and a good game of cards. He ran the Cinch League in Cumberland and was the captain of the Cumberland Hotel Crib Team for several years. Sam spent many hours playing 31 with his grandchildren.
He and Cathy shared a love for fishing, hunting and picking mushrooms and spent many summers camping with family and friends. In the last few years he wasn’t able to get out much but enjoyed spending time with his two beloved dogs, Max and Ella. His laughter will linger and his memory will live on in our hearts forever.
There will be a gathering of friends and family at the Cumberland Legion (2770 Dunsmuir Ave.) on Friday, February 24, 2017 at 3:00 p.m., please join us to share your memories.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Sam’s name to Y.A.N.A
