Tiiu passed away peacefully in her sleep Wednesday October 18, 2023. Tiiu was born in Tallin Estonia on April 3, 1938. The family escaped Estonia in 1944 and made their way to Canada through refugee camps in 1949. After several moves the family finally settled in Brockville, Ontario. Tiiu pursued a career in teaching while raising 4 children. She got her B.A. going to night school while teaching full time. She taught kindergarten to grade 3 while in Ontario. In 1980 her career took her to British Columbia where she taught in Alert Bay, Port McNeill, New Denver, and finally retiring from teaching in Sointula. She spent a few years tutoring after that.
Tiiu's love of everything ocean drew her farther and farther west until she settled on Malcolm Island just one block from the water. She had many hobbies ranging from gardening to music, but found her passion when she discovered birding. She instilled her respect and love of nature to all she encountered, whether she was hiking the mountains, taking her grandchildren through tidal pools, or helping to identify birds and their unique calls. May she return to those places that brought her so much peace and joy.
Tiiu is predeceased by her parents Julius and Valve(Val) Jaasnalu and her brother Ants. Tiiu is survived by her children Peter(Siri), Paul(Christine), Julia, and Gordon(Lisa), grandchildren Ted, Megan, Nick, Patrick, Douglas, Vince, Logan, Katie, her great grandchildren Theo and Daxton, her sisters Mai Dulmage, Ann Thompson and Tiina Price(Chris), and many nieces and nephews.
The celebration of life will take place at a later date on Malcolm Island.
In lieu of flowers the family is asking that donations be made in Tiiu's name to music and arts programs at the Views at St. Joseph's via www.cvhealthcarefoundatiob.com/giving/ways-to-give/gifts-in-honour/
indicate in your comments you would like the money to go to those programs.
