I met a you a few times George.  A gentle man who spoke his mind and cared for about Doris and his family. J J and Beverly spoke kindly of you as well. You will be missed by all.  A friend of Beverly. My condolences to your family and friends

To Doris, John, and Bev: I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I always enjoyed talking to George and know that he will be greatly missed. Know that I am thinking of you and praying for you.

When we announced to George that Stuart and I were getting married, George tried to convince us that it was better to wait as we only knew each other less than three months. This was on the exact date of my 27th birthday.
Subsequently, he asked me to cook him a steak dinner and sent me out to buy the potatoes. I did leave, but kept going. He never got his dinner that day :)

We often had a very different point of view and that exasperated him from time to time. He would refer to me then as "Dutch dummkopf" (not the right meaning of the word). We agreed to disagree on lots of occasions and over the years came to a mutual understanding.

George was one of our most frequent visitors over the past 38 years. Wherever in the world we lived, George visited.
He enjoyed spending time with our family  during his yearly extended visits, mostly combined with a family holiday. He loved family mealtimes followed by lively discussions. There was never any shortage of opinions in a household with all very strong personalities and I think he got a great kick out of that.
We have many memories of family holidays that George was part of.  As long as he had a comfortable bed and enough food to keep him satisfied, he was literally a happy camper. He was particularly fond of the Rocky mountains.

Opa George, 
'Never, never, never give up...' was one of your more frequent sayings, this one from Winston Churchill and also the one that stuck by me the most. The other one being 'We do things big here in Canada'. For me, those two sayings describe you the best as my grandfather. You lived a big life with your business and going from Ireland to Canada. I remember you being optimistic and keeping your health and well-being a priority. Without fail, no matter the setbacks in your health. Preferably with a good walk, a bowl of Campbell's Chunky stew and a 12-minute boiled egg. Lastly I remember you being proud - of Canada for sure but I think also of your children and the life you built with oma Doris. 
I'll fondly think of the summers you stayed with us, mostly camping in the Rockies - surprisingly in your element. I'll remember things that were important to you, proud to be your granddaughter.

Dad on bear watch in Grand Cache Alberta  while we fixed the truck. Joggers told us a bear was spotted in vicinity and to be alert. Before long, dad wanted a cup of tea.
