Al was born April 17, 1945 in Cleveland, Ohio, to Albert and Margaret Yerkish. After earning his B.A. Degree from Kent State University, Al played minor league baseball until an injury cut his career short. He later moved his family to Southern California, where he lived for over 40 years. He worked in the food service industry for several years, which culminated with being an owner-operator of two family restaurants. His true calling, however, was in education. Al touched the lives of both students and faculty for 24 years while he worked as a Teacher at Covina High School. He also served as coach for the softball and basketball teams for many years. Al later became the coach for the softball team at Bishop Amat High School and was an Assistant Coach for the football team at Pomona-Pitzer College.
Al loved to help others and served his community through the Knights of Columbus, where he became a member in 1979. He also served as a Grand Knight in the 1992-1993 Columbian Year.
He is survived by his wife, Kathie, his son Eddie and his spouse Hillary, daughter Tina, son Andrew and his grandchildren Thomas, Avery and Holly.
A memorial service has been scheduled at Custer Christiansen Mortuary at 124 S. Citrus Ave., Covina CA 91723 on September 14, 2012 at 4:00 PM.
