

Myrtle Compton Washington was born December 13, 1921 to the union of John and Gertude Compton. She had three brothers. She was raised in Bunkie, Louisiana. She accepted Christ at a young age and was baptized at Magnolia Baptist Church in Evergreen, Louisiana. Myrtle went to school at Magnolia Baptist Church that was used as a school building for the Afro-American students during the week and a church on Sunday. She enjoyed going to school. She took part in the school programs. Her mother died when she was young, so she learned early to talk to the Lord. Her grandmothers taught her to sew, quilt, can vegetables and fruits and to be a good cook. She was a hard worker, and didn’t mind helping her father farm. She didn’t mind picking cotton. Her father was a great example for her. She shined when he would praise her for her hard work. Myrtle was joined in Holy Matrimony to Walter Washington, Sr. of Evergreen, Louisiana on June 27, 1940. To this union, 9 children were born. Myrtle and her husband and their children moved to Los Angeles, California in 1957 and joined the 103 Street Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Napoleon F. Fisher which later was renamed Citizens of Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Compton, California, under the leadership of Rev. B.T. Newman. Myrtle and Walter later relocated their family to La Puente in 1964. While driving to Compton every Sunday, but looking for a church that was a little closer to home, someone told them about a church named St. Stephens. So in 1973 they became members. Myrtle was active in church. She served on the Mother’s Board, Wednesday Bible Study, The Golden Circle Ministry and Sunday School. She was a #1 supporter of the Choirs by saying “Sing Choir”! Myrtle was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Washington, Sr. of 53 years, oldest daughter, Delores Turner and granddaughter, Angelique Washington. Myrtle leaves to cherish her memory and continue her legacy her 3 daughters, Janice Washington of La Puente, California, Shirley A Carter of Portland, Oregon, and Amy R. Washington of La Puente, California. Her 5 sons, Archie Washington of Gresham, Oregon, Walter Washington, Jr. of La Puente, California, Dwight R. Washington of West Covina, California, Jackie E. Washington of Menifee, California and Henry J. Washington of Pasadena, California. 13 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild, 2 brothers , Johnny Compton of Houston, Texas and Douglas R. Compton of Crestview, Florida, a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
