Howard Sanders Hughes passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 5, 2023, at the age of 90. He was born on May 1, 1932, in Hammond, LA, to Jefferson Davis Hughes of Hammond and Catherine Beyer Hughes of Baton Rouge. He was a direct descendant of Peter Hammond, who founded Hammond, LA. He was the youngest of four children, and was preceded in death by his sister Catherine Illingworth and brothers J.D. and Charles Hughes.
Sanders, as he was then called by his family, enjoyed a happy childhood exploring the great outdoors, fishing, hunting, as well as playing team sports, serving as an altar boy and helping on the family farm. He attended Holy Ghost Catholic School, Southeastern High School, Southeastern Louisiana University and Louisiana State University.
At age 19, Howard volunteered to serve the U.S. Army in the Korean Conflict. Following basic training, he was tested and then selected amongst hundreds of his peers to form a five-man team to operate an advanced mobile radar unit. He served as team leader of two units while operating in enemy territory, while earning a promotion to corporal.
Upon honorable discharge, Howard returned to Hammond and continued studies at Louisiana State University. On a blind date with college friends, he met the love of his life, Victoria Margavio of New Orleans. They were married just over a year later. Together they had three children; the late David Sanders Hughes, Christine Perrin, and the late Jeffery Joseph Hughes. Christine is married to Ignace Perrin, III. They have two sons, Ignace IV (Caroline) and Nicholas.
Early on, Howard and Vicki lived in uptown New Orleans where they remained involved in the community. Howard was trained in finance and credit management by the Universal CIT Credit Corporation, serving as branch manager of its Gretna office, followed by a successful career in credit management. He served as president of the New Orleans Chapter of the National Institute of Credit and a member of the Charles Carroll Council of the Knights of Columbus. Following retirement, Howard and Vicki moved to the North Shore and resided in Covington.
Throughout his life, Howard enjoyed sports as both a participant and spectator. In addition to team sports during his educational years, he was a member of his first-place Army unit volleyball team. He was an avid golfer, hunter and fisherman and enjoyed sharing these hobbies with his son-in-law and teaching his two grandsons. He took great pleasure in keeping up with college and professional sports, especially PGA golf, was also member of the Baytree Hunting Club, which he enjoyed with family, especially his brothers and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to gather for visitation at Grace Funeral Home, 450 Holy Trinity Drive, Covington, LA 70433 on Monday, February 13, 2023 at 9:00 AM. Words of remembrance will begin at 9:45 AM followed by Mass of Christian Burial, officiated by Msgr. Frank Giroir at 10:00AM.
Howard will be laid to rest in Southeast Louisiana Veterans Cemetery, 34888 Grantham College Drive, Slidell, Louisiana 70458 following services.
