

Doris Dawn Harrah, 83, passed away on August 9, 2015. She was born on September 17, 1931 in Charleston, WV to Dewey and Mary Smith. Doris graduated from Dunbar High School in 1949. After high school she attended Morris Harvey College, and later received an education degree from West Virginia State College. During her 30 years with Kanawha County Schools, she taught at Point Harmony Elementary, Arthur I. Boreman, and Dunbar Elementary. She was a passionate teacher, touching the lives of many; she continued to substitute throughout her retirement. Doris married John Harrah in 1954 in Dunbar, WV. They were happily married for 61 years. Doris was a member of Humphrey’s Memorial United Methodist Church. She was a member of Kanawha County Education Association, West Virginia Education Association, and the National Education Association, Delta Kappa Gamma where she was treasurer for many years, the Cross Lanes Women’s Club, and Eastern Star. Doris is survived by her husband John, son Jeff, and daughters Mari-Leigh Holcomb and Roxanne (Adam E.) Cadle, all of Cross Lanes, WV; grandchildren Abigail Cadle, John Holcomb, and Mason Laremore; sister Yolanda (Okey G.) Roberts of Dunbar, WV, brother-in- law Charles Moses, both of Dunbar; and her nieces and nephews. Doris was proceeded in death by her parents Dewey and Mary; and her sister Jane Mikell Moses. Doris enjoyed traveling, volunteering her time, and watching various ballgames, depending on the season, with her husband, John. Her greatest joy was spending time with her children, family, and friends. For the last 19 years she enjoyed many friendships while exercising with a group at South Charleston Community Center. She was an accomplished knitter and produced beautiful sweaters and other garments. She would tell you “I am not a farmer’s wife”, but every summer she canned fresh vegetables form her husband’s garden. Family and friends especially enjoyed her pickled beets and bread and butter pickles. Services will be held Thursday, August 13th, 2015 at 3:30pm. Visitation will be from 2:30pm until the time of service. Interment will follow in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens.
