Ira Monroe (Jack) Dabney, 93, passed away on Friday, March 6, 2026. He was born on Easter Sunday, March 28, 1932, the son of Kenneth Wayne and Helen (Poffenbarger) Dabney. His birthplace in Mason County, West Virginia, later became part of the Cornstalk Game Preserve. His family moved to Huntington, West Virginia, when he was five years old, and he subsequently graduated from Huntington East High School.
In 1953, he married his beloved Marilyn Miller, and they celebrated 70 years together until her death on September 9, 2024. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marilyn; his sisters, Phyllis Lyons and Julia Adkins; and his son-in-law, Jeffrey West. He is survived by his four loving daughters and three wonderful sons-in-law: Linda West, Janet and Rick Booker, Carolyn and Wayne Shafer, and Kathy and Tracy Trail, (who were able to care for him at home with the kindness and support of Hospice), in addition to 9 grandchildren and 4 great grandsons.
He loved life and often mentioned how lucky he was to have such an interesting one. He was a paperboy for Huntington Publishing, a night janitor for the Cabell County school system, a beer distributor in Point Pleasant, an employee of the International Nickel Co., city of Huntington fire fighter, and a U.S. Postal Service clerk, carrier, and postal inspector. During his 26-year-career as a postal inspector, he handled cases as far away as Los Angeles, Georgia, and Puerto Rico while being assigned to the New York, Washington, DC, and Pittsburgh divisions. After retiring, he volunteered at the Shawnee Golf Course as a ranger where he could pursue his love of golf.
Jack was a Korean war veteran who served three years in the United States Marine Corps as a corporal in the engineering division and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. While attending a celebration for Woody Williams, he said he was honored to be the Marine to slice the cake with a sword.
Celebration of Jack’s life will be 1:00 P.M. Saturday, March 14, 2026, at Tyler Mt. Funeral Home with Reverend Jill Jenkins officiating. Entombment will follow in Tyler Mt. Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes, with Military Graveside Rites conducted by St. Albans VFW Post 6418 and American Legion Post 73.
Gathering of family and friends will be from noon until time of service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to HospiceCare, 1606 Kanawha Boulevard West, Charleston, WV 25387.
