After a prolonged illness, Colonel Johnnie L. Young (75) passed away Monday June 24, 2024, at Celebration Villa Memory Care Facility, Hurricane, WV. Born on December 21, 1948, Johnnie leaves behind a long and rich legacy filled with integrity, kindness, and a life rich in accomplishments and relationships. He loved the Lord and recognized Him as his savior.
Johnnie graduated from Herbert Hoover High School and Morris Harvey College with a bachelor’s degree in education. During his early career, he served as a math teacher at Elkview Junior High School. He retired from the West Virginia Army National Guard (WVARNG) after 38 years of service. After military retirement, he continued his public service attitude by working as a WV State senior employee. In both the military and state positions, Johnnie served passionately and demonstrated a dynamic and robust love for his state and country.
Professionally, Colonel Young was a respected leader and commissioned officer in the Army National Guard, attaining the rank of Colonel. He served in multiple leadership positions while in the National Guard. He earned multiple awards and decorations, noteworthy of which was the Legion of Merit.
Two significant highlights of his career were being chosen as primary lead for a Presidential visit of President Bush and jumping out of perfectly good airplanes while serving in 2/19th Special Forces Group. Johnnie’s profound leadership to the citizens of West Virginia and the United States was typified by unselfish service. This service, especially during multiple major disasters, was often praised by both State and National leaders. With a “can do” focus, he continually emphasized “It could be my family or your family in trouble.” He loved America with all his heart.
Most noteworthy was Johnnie’s keen desire to support, assist, and mentor those having unseen abilities and/or problems. He always spoke up for the right and abhorred that which was wrong, a reflection of his altruistic nature.
His favorite hobbies include fishing hunting at his friend’s camp on the Elk River, hauling fish (trout and blue cats) for Indian Fishing Lake, and helping others with their problems, no matter how large or how small.
Johnnie was preceded in death by his parents Herbert Marco Young and Betty Marie Whitlock Young and his sister Judy Boothe. Johnnie’s memory is honored and kept alive by his loving wife, Donna, and his children, Tim Young, Robie Wilcox (Ray), Niki McGrew, and Shane McGrew (Sabrina). Johnnie leaves behind seven grandchildren, Jazlyn (Nate), Issac, Avery, Ayrnn, Isabella, Morgan, and Peighton and one great grandson Kane. Colonel Young also left one brother - Major General Ronnie Young (Maureen). He also leaves behind Pastor Carolyn Walker, who Johnnie and Donna consider a sister and precious friend.
Colonel Young’s commitment to his family, community and the nation is profound. He most frequently talked with great love and respect for his children (about karate, shooting bows, their lives, their decisions, and that he loved them all.)
A celebration of Johnnie’s life will be held on July 8, 2024, with a gathering of family and friends from 1:00 to 2:00 and a Celebration of Life Service at 2:00 at Tyler Mountain Funeral Home. Immediately following the service, will be a reception at the funeral home allowing family and friends time for personal reflection and love.
Pastor Mike Todorovich will be officiating the service. Special friend and Pastor Carolyn Walker, and brother Major General (Ret) Ronnie Young will be providing insights as to Johnnie’s life.
Johnnie’s warmth, wisdom, and the joy he brought to life will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His life was well-lived and a legacy that will continue to inspire.
The family extends a heartfelt “thank you” to Hospice House and Celebration Villa of Teays Valley for their tender caring and love during Johnnie’s time with them.
