Peggy D. Stewart, 94, of Cross Lanes, formerly of Sissonville, passed away on January 25, 2026, at Sweetbriar Assisted Living, Dunbar, from complications resulting from a fall. She was the oldest of five children born to Martin B. and Verba Turner of Brownsville, IL.
She lived in southern Illinois until 1960 when she moved with her family to West Virginia, residing in Weston and Spencer before settling in the Charleston area in 1968. After her children were grown, she returned to school and entered the workforce for the first time as a Certified Nursing Assistant at CAMC General Division 6 South Orthopedic from where she retired with over 20 years of service.
She was caring and compassionate, fiercely independent and had a great sense of humor that she maintained until her final days. She was a wonderful Mother, sister, friend, neighbor and co-worker and she will be deeply missed.
Her love of children led her to assume the role of “bonus Grandma” to several children over the years; Carly, Derrick, Shelly, Austin, Spenser, Wynston, Sawyer, Gracyn, and Easton who she loved as if they were her very own.
She also loved flowers and vegetable gardening, transplanting 30 years of plants from Sissonville to her new home in Cross Lanes after two devasting floods claimed her property, challenging events she faced with her usual perseverance and determination.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Glenn; infants, Mark, and Lisa; brothers, John Edward and Martin Dee Turner.
She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Stewart of South Charleston; brother, Dwight (Vanda) of Norris City, IL; and sister, Patsy Ackerman of McLeansboro, IL.
Per her wishes, her body was cremated and there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Kanawha Hospice, 1606 Kanawha Blvd. W., Charleston, WV 25327 in her memory.
The family extends their gratitude to the staff at Sweetbriar Assisted Living in Dunbar for the dedicated and compassionate care provided to her in recent years.
