PHYLLIS “JEAN” DENT, 90, of St. Albans passed peacefully on May 9,2024 after an extended illness. She was born April 12, 1934 to the late Donna Pauline Smith and Roy N. Richardson and was the oldest of five children. In addition to her parents Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Tony Oliver Dent and siblings, Robert “Bobby” Richardson and Nancy “Jill” Lemaster.
Jean was an expert seamstress, cook, and card player. She also enjoyed bingo and flower gardening. She had a zest for life and made friends wherever she went. Jean loved her family, neighbors, and friends from her Friday night card games, as well as her classmates from Dunbar High School, class of 1952.
Surviving Jean are her son, Bill Cottle (Becky) of St. Albans, daughters, Bobbi Lewis (Greg) of St. Albans and Toni Priestley (Brent) of Hurricane; grandsons, Andy Cottle, Evan Lewis, and Lucas Priestley; granddaughters, Libby Bird, Jessie Lewis, and Savannah Priestley; great grandchildren, Logan, Lincoln, Ava, and Grant; sisters, Karen Bailey of Nitro and Sharon Persinger of Santee, SC; sisters-in-law, Lynn Harris of Morehead City, NC and Lou Smith of Kanawha City. Jean also left behind her cat, Daisy, which is now in the loving care of special friends and neighbors, Dan and Donna Atkinson. A special thank you to Jean’s caregiver, Sharon Woodrum, for her support and love. Jean will surely be missed by her family and friends.
It was Jean’s wish to be cremated. There will be a funeral service on Monday, May 13 at 12:00 at First Baptist Church of St. Albans, 523 2nd Street with Pastor Joel Harpold officiating. Friends may call 1 hour prior to the service. Jean will be laid to rest with her late husband, Tony, at Lawson Cemetery on Big Creek in Hamlin, WV in a private ceremony.
