Cinda Schrock McKinney (August 29, 1944 - February 12, 2023), a Croton-on-Hudson resident, died peacefully at home among family at the age of 78. Cinda is survived by her two children Anne (James) Tyre, Sarah (Daniel) Gomez, and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son Nathaniel C. McKinney in 1986 and her husband Dr. Stephen C. McKinney in 1987.
Cinda was born on August 29, 1944, to Harold and Thelma Schrock in Goshen, Indiana. The third of five children, Cinda attended local schools in Goshen and graduated from DePauw University in 1966. It was at DePauw that she met Stephen McKinney, and in 1967 they were married at First English Lutheran Church in Goshen. Cinda later earned an MBA from Boston University, and she and Steve made homes in Wisconsin and California before moving to and settling in New England. Together Cinda and Steve had three children, Nate, Anne, and Sarah.
Always active in the various communities she lived in over the years, Cinda was a stalwart philanthropist. She volunteered for Habitat for Humanity, the local Red Cross chapter, Red Cross Disaster Relief, and served on the board of YWCA. Cinda was both Junior and Senior Warden at the Church of the Atonement in Westfield, MA, and also served as a Trustee of the Episcopal Diocese of Western Massachusetts. She was a member of the Hopefully Well Affected Literary Club, an organizer of Mahogany Grove Lutheran Church in Anguilla, and supported both the Anguilla Animal Rescue Foundation (AARF) and the Westfield Food Pantry. Additionally, she served as Chairman of the Board of both Earthway Products, in Bristol, Indiana, and SmokerCraft Inc., in New Paris, Indiana.
Cinda was not only giving and compassionate but resilient, intelligent, loving and faith filled. She loved the White Mountains of New Hampshire, cooking delicious meals, reading novels, traveling with family, hiking and kayaking. In the winter you would find Cinda walking her dog on a beach in Anguilla; in the summer she would be picking blueberries in New Hampshire and enjoying a gin and tonic on her dock at Newfound Lake. She loved her grandchildren dearly and treasured time spent reading aloud to them.
A memorial service will be celebrated for Cinda at St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church, 6 Old Post Road, Croton-on-Hudson, NY, on Wednesday, February 15 at 11:00 AM. Interment will be at Violett Cemetery in Goshen, Indiana. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Newfound Lake Regional Association (www.newfoundlake.org) or the Croton-Cortlandt Food Pantry (www.foodpantryincroton.org), two organizations that Cinda generously supported.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.efcarterfuneralhome.com for the McKinney family.
