
Mary Sarah Mugerwa-Gitta of Cortlandt Manor, NY, died from complications of COVID-19 in the afternoon of April 2nd, 2020, at New York-Presbyterian Hospital in Cortlandt Manor after about two weeks of critical illness. Her funeral was on April 22nd, 2020, at St. Augustine Cemetery in Ossining, New York.
Mary was born on December 23rd, 1960, in Kikungwe, Masaka, Uganda, to Mr. Sadic Mugerwa and Mrs. Aisha Nnanfuka Mugerwa. After Kikungwe primary school, she attended several secondary schools at Agakahn Masaka, Kiburi, Nabisunsa, and Nkokonjeru in Uganda.
In 1981, she came to the United States and attended Sacred Heart Academy in Hamden, Connecticut. Following high school, she attended Seton Hall University, where she graduated with a bachelor's degree in accounting. She interned with the United Nations Project Services (UNOPS) and began her career with the United Nations that spanned many years. For the most part, she provided accounting services for the UNDP Bureau for Asia and the Pacific and the Department of Finance in the Bureau of Management. Mary took much pride in her accounting work as she facilitated recruitments and various payments to staff and outside contractors.
In 2005, Mary decided to make a career change and went on to study nursing. Despite the many challenges she encountered, Mary managed to become a passionate caregiver to people with mental disabilities. For years, she cared for hundreds of the most vulnerable adults in Briarcliff Manor and Yorktown Heights. With her profound sense of humor and amazing culinary skills, Mary won herself many friends who will miss her very much.
Mary married Cosmas Gitta in New York City in 1993, and they had three children. She is survived by her husband, and her children, Noah, Joshua Gitta, and Anita Gitta. She also leaves behind her beloved brothers Badru Kiggundu of Newark, New Jersey, Isaac Kiggundu of Billerica, Boston MA, Rashid SSali Mugerwa of Kampala; sisters Sauda Mugerwa of Kikungwe, Masaka, and Sulaina Kiggundu of Newark, New Jersey plus many nephews and nieces.
The family would like to heartily thank the many physicians, caregivers at Hudson Valley Hospital who spared no effort to care for Mary during her final days.
