I was thinking of you today as I have every day since 2/17/14.  I have no idea what made me look you up in people search where I read that you had passed away - it was hard to believe that God took you home three short days after I left the Rehabilitation Center.  We knew each other only ten days and my heart bleeds to just find out that you have entered our Father's Kingdom.  There is no more pain, I know you are at peace.  It was an honor to know you.  Your loving family, who I also got to know, will miss you terribly, remember she is always with you and watching over you all.  God Bless and RIP Roberta Maio.  Kim Ruggiero

Roberta (or Ms. Maio as us new teachers at FDA always called her) was my first great support into the teaching world. I remember the sign in front of her desk that read "There will be a 25 cent charge if you're in a bad mood." Despite the high demands of FDA she was always positive. She supported all my projects often putting up her own credit card before getting reimbursed by the grantors. It really pains me inside to get this news. She was an outstanding person and a pleasure to work with. My sincere condolences to her family. She will be greatly missed.

I first met Roberta when I was 12  years old.  It's been many years since I spoke to her. Then, I found her on fb.  She remembered a time in my life when I was 14 years old. What a great memory that I had long forgotten.  I will always have that now . Thank you Roberta.

On behalf of everyone from Ithaca College who knew Roberta and was the recipient of her many kindnesses, I offer our deeply felt condolences to her family and friends. We will miss her smile, her laughter, and her joyful spirit. There is much sadness in our hearts today, but we also know Roberta would want us all to celebrate her life by living ours to the fullest.Smile on Roberta -- smile on!

To all of the Maio and Nuzzo clan, we are so sorry for your loss.  For the past 15 years or so, we have been part of the annual Nuzzo Easter celebration and enjoyed being around Roberta when she came to visit Joe and Dorothy or at the Shakespeare Festival.  Her presence will be greatly missed by all of us.  In the hope that research can progress one day to a cure for cancer, we have made a donation to The American Cancer Society in her name.  Our thoughts and prayers are with you all in these difficult moments.

It has been my distinct honor to have worked with Ms. Roberta Maio, aka "Ms. Rosy Glasses," for over 30 years. During that time, I have seen Ms. Maio go out of her way for thousands of people. She was the first person to send a kind word to a sick staff member.  In her world, the glass was always half full. She was the eternal optimist.  She was very sensitive to teachers and their needs.  In the old days when it took almost four months to get on payroll, she would say to me, "We have to help the new teacher." And even when staff members failed to repay the funds that we loaned them, she would always smile and say, "Don't worry, they will make payment."  We go back a long way to the good old days at Morris High School.  She started in the Adminstration Office.  The first day when she interviewed, there were several fights and one of the students was brought into my office in handcuffs.  I said to her that this was an anomoly.  After being hired, a few days later she said, "You lied," smiled and started laughing. Roberta was always one to smile, even when times were difficult. She had a knack for saying the right thing to make you smile.  I remember working late into the evening and she told me, "It is 10 p.m. Do you know where you should be ? HOME ! She screamed in the phone."  Even when people did strange and bizzare things she would always say they acted outside of their character and we should give that person another chance.  Roberta was a take charge person and was always one to jump in, help out and take charge. Roberta was a jack of all trades and would not wait for the custodian to fix something; she would just jump on a chair ( which occasionally broke ) and repair it herself. Roberta was a bundle of energy.  If there was a party to be planned, she was at the front of the line helping out. When her grandson was born, she proudly placed his picture on the screen saver on her computer and shared it with everyone - God's gift to her lovely daughter Debra and her husband.  When Debra became a principal, it was Roberta who was there to help out and get things organized.  Roberta loved her family dearly, loved and enjoyed life.  We should celebrate Roberta's life and not mourn her passing. And what a wonderful life she lived. We are all richer for having had Roberta in our lives.

During the past 30 years Roberta has served in many roles: secretary in Administration, Principal's Secretary, Payroll Secretary, School Treasurer, Trip Coordinator, Trip Planner with Ms. Nunez, Manager of the Little Shop of Scholars, Gilder Lehrman Coordinator, Secret Santa Coordinator, Sunshine Coordinator, and the list goes on and on.  The Payroll Office was always crowded. If you had a problem you knew where to go for help. She was like Lucy in the Peanuts comic strip, and if she charged a nickel for her counsel she would have been a millionaire.  She often wore multiple hats and was always able to smile and make a few jokes.  Even in the darkest days of her husband's battle with cancer,  she was a pillar of strength and always spoke words of encouragement.  The most important role she played was that of being a FRIEND to so many.  She will be missed. My deepest condolences to Joe, Debra and her family, her son, her sister, and the entire Maio family. 

Last summer was a wonderful time for Roberta and her family.  They took an exciting trip to Alaska. She shared the many happy moments with us by way of the countless pictures she took.  I ask that we focus our attention on the many wonderful memories that we have of our dear FRIEND Roberta.  May she join the angels above and continue planning, organzing and directing in heaven.

Robert, known to me respectfully as Mrs. Maio, was always such a joy to be around.  She would make announcements from the "friendly neighborhood payroll security," and there was always kindness and sincerity in her voice.  Even when you heard her I knew she was smiling.  She had the heart of a servant.  She helped me out and encouraged me in so many ways in my career, and in my martial arts program.  She always had kind words when I shared pictures of my family with her, and she shared pictures of her grandson with me.  She loved family, and was always a joy to be around.  Even when I would go in to talk "business" it felt like you were talking more to loving mother than a payroll secretary.  I also can never forget one of her signatures was talking about food, as if food were a friend of her.  She woudl speak about the "nice meatballs," wonderful "ravioli", one need not ask if she was Italian.

I greatly miss her presence, and have missed it at the school since she "retired" and then became sick.  Her life causes me to more treasure life, and remember the preciousness of life.  We are here today, gone tomorrow, so live a life that you want to be remembered for.  I have prayed for her when she asked me to, and even when she didn't for others, and for her as well.

I am praying for the family and leave them with the most powerful words, from Christ Himself.

This is a time when words are just not enough.  We have lost such an amazing person, whose larger than life personality, will remain in our hearts, forever!

My deepest sympathies.  Ms. Maio will be sincerely missed by her FDA family.  She was always a beacon of light  and organization in a sometimes dark and chaotic place. I have very fond memories of visiting with her in her first floor office over the years.  She was a good and kind person who left the world a better place because she dwelt upon it.

I have such wonderful memories growing up with Roberta and the Nuzzo family. I cherished those Sunday picnics, and Jones Beach adventures. I hope all can find strength in remembering the bright light she was.

I have known Roberta and the Nuzzo family since 1955, and they were deeply entrenched in my life since then. She was a wonderful friend and person who was always bigger than life. We all are going to miss her voice, booming laughter and conventional wisdom. Heaven has their hands full with Roberta. Doreen and I send our most sincere condolences to the Maios and the Nuzzos.  So long buddy!

I am so sorry to hear of Roberta's passing. I haven't seen her in a very long time. I got to know her when her brother in law John was so sick. She was such a nice person. So stong, kind and with a beautiful smile. My heart goes out to you Joe. Keep your family in my thoughts and prayers.

Words cannot express my hurt for the family.  Roberta was one of the nicest people I ever met and she will be missed greatly by her family and friends. My sincerest condolences to Joe, Ralphie, Lorraine, Dominic, Joey and the entire Maio and Nuzzo families.  My memories growing up of Roberta are that she was always bigger than life itself.  She was always laughing, always looking out for and helping others.  I especially remember her carrying Joey past the Melrose projects on our way to school so that he wouldn't have to step on the worms that covered the sidewalk after it rained.  My heart aches for your loss.  I will keep you all in my prayers.
