She was born October 9, 1926 in Chicago to Mitchell and Helen (nee Czarny) Nowak. Marge lost her mother to leukemia when she was only eight years old. Her dad raised her and her sister alone from that point on. A commendable feat… a single dad with two daughters during the Great Depression. Marge always prayed to the Virgin Mary for guidance in the absence of her own mother.
Marge met her first love Stanley Kocol while roller skating at Riverview Roller Rink in Chicago. They married in 1947 and went on to have three children, Norm, Terri and Ron. Cancer claimed the life of Stanley in 1969.
Marge also loved ballroom dancing and consequently met the second love of her life, Richard Quinn, on the dance floor. They married in 1970 and their families became one with children Norm, Terri, Ron, Jim and Marilyn.
Marge was a spitfire and loved excitement. You could see her climbing on a roller coaster while in her 60’s and still roller skating at her grandkids' skating parties. She often talked about 2 cent days at Riverview (Chicago’s amusement park) and riding every ride.
Before and after retiring, Dick and Marge loved cruising. They kept many travel log videos of their adventures.
Her expertise in bookkeeping afforded her to keep meticulous records, from cataloging her collection of Barbies (123 of them!) to helping organize their Cousin Club activities. Marge only had one sister but a multitude of cousins. Family was paramount so all the first cousins met a few times a year and a ‘whole’ family (1st, 2nd, 3rd cousins) picnic was held once a year.
She loved Shirley Temple and her screen love was Nelson Eddy. She amassed quite a collection of DVD’s. She enjoyed watching the old movies. Columbo and Murder She Wrote were among her favorite series. She taught her children all the old songs singing along with Mitch Miller and watching Lawrence Welk. The Bill Cosby albums were played so often, they almost wore out but they brought so much laughter to the home.
Once they retired to Florida, Dick and Marge were an integral part of the Irish Club. They were very social and often hosted parties for their various social groups and for their neighbors.
Marge will be greatly missed by her children, Norm (Mary) Kocol, Terri (Ken) Hernacki, Ron (Chris) Kocol, Marilyn (Bill) Scholle and her daughter-in-law, Ellen Quinn. She was the proud grandma of Matt (Andrea) Hernacki, Amanda (Ryan) Fosnaugh, Katie Hernacki, William Kocol, Renee (Patrick) Schott, James (Emily) Kocol, Tory Herr, Tanis (Brenton) Welch, Patrick (Juvy) Quinn, Jaime (Jon) Santorella, Paula Hammontree, Loretta (Paul) Guben, Robert Hammontree, Roxy Diaz. She cherished her great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Caden, Lucas, Adam, Dallas, Jonathan, Benjamin, Beckham, Berkleigh, Jessica, Samantha, Heather, Daniel, Josh, Nick, Jake, Paulie, Jacob, Lillie, Noah, Alex, Audrey, Ben, Brandon, Robert; and her nine great-great grandchildren.
Marge was preceded in death by her mother in 1935; her husband Stanley in 1969; her father in 1981; her son Richard James Quinn, Jr in 1998; her husband Richard in 2017; her sister Delores in 2024; and all of her first cousins. Marge was the last survivor of her generational family.
There will be a visitation from 9:30am to 10:45am on Saturday, October 4 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 10519 N Main St, Richmond, IL 60071. The funeral Mass will follow at 11am.
