Mr. Yarbrough was born in 1930 to Harriette “Drake” Yarbrough and Henry Yarbrough of Vinemont, Alabama. Fred was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Freeda L. Haynie ; his parents; three brothers; Joe, Russell (Cush), and Ferrell ; his grandparents including a beloved grandmother, Fannie Jane (Maw) Drake; and an infant son, Fred Jr. Survivors include two daughters, Sherry (Tom) Kinney and Pam Yarbrough; two sons, Drake and Fred (Tara) Yarbrough; two brothers, Frank (Mary) and Ronald Yarbrough; two sisters, Dorothy (Bill) Sexton and Patsy Lancaster; four grandchildren, Tonya (Jason) Driver, Taylor, Kayla and Baylee Yarbrough; and one great-grandchild, Felicity Driver.
At the age of 20, Fred joined the Army and trained as a paratrooper/medic for deployment in the Korean War. After suffering an injury during a night time jump exercise, Fred was honorably discharged in 1953. The next year, Fred married Freeda L. Haynie (daughter of the late John and Barbara Haynie of Eva, Alabama). During the next few years, Fred attended college at St. Bernard and Florence State (now UNA). After college, Fred worked in sales for the Standard Candy Company and with the Liggett and Myers Tobacco Company. Fred spent the next 16 years as a US mail carrier for the Vinemont area delivering mail for route 2 residents.
Known throughout the area as a guide and lifelong fisherman, Fred spent many an hour fishing on the bass tournament circuit. Partnering with local anglers such as Don Evans, Bill Anderson, Tom Drake, Doug Lewey, Carlton Pitts, and Dexter Perkins, many a tall tale was born.
In the Yarbrough household, a lively political discussion was always close at hand. Fred was a lifelong Yellow Dog Democrat and was often called upon to “rally the troops” at local political conventions. Fred was also a Freemason and often worked to help people throughout the community.
From the Yarbrough family, we would like to thank all of the individuals and families that played an important role in the life of our dad throughout the years, especially the Tom (Christine) Drake family, Wendell (Janice) Roden family, Larry (Diane) Crocker family, and the Tom Burleson family.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, May 9, 2010 from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
