Mrs. Hazel Karter Power Daniel

Hazel was born in Cullman, Alabama on November 9, 1925. She was the daughter of Charles Davis Power and Emma Woodard Power. Her father died in 1929 and her mother married Arthur “Jabo” Karter on April 12, 1933.

She was baptized by Rev. Henry Meyer at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church on September 13, 1936. He also performed her confirmation at St. Paul’s on August 6, 1939.

On December 24, 1944, Hazel married Ralph Hugh Daniel and the ceremony was led by Rev. Henry Meyer at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.

Hazel’s legacy is rich. She has a daughter- Saundra Daniel Cuyler (and husband Richard); son- Larry Arthur Daniel (and wife Sonya); sister- Joan Karter Pedota; sister-in-law- Eloise Daniel Meyer (and husband Del); granddaughters- Lindsey Karter Bosso (and husband Ryan), Lydia Kathryn Lorang (and husband Kenneth), and Lauren Alyssa Prosser (and husband Aaron); and great grandchildren- Karter Elijah Lorang, Ava Shaw Bosso, and Natalie Brynn Bosso.

Huntsville, Alabama was Hazel’s home from 1946 to 1960. During her early years, she attended St. Mark’s United Lutheran Church. She taught Sunday School and was an active member of the Evangelism Committee when the first German scientists came from Texas to Redstone Arsenal. Later, with two other families, services were organized and held on Sunday nights at the Episcopal Church in Huntsville, Alabama. A Missouri Synod minister from Decatur, Rev. Ron Reinhardt, serviced this small group. Later she helped the Southern District Secretary from New Orleans obtain the property and parsonage for this mission congregation, which later became Huntsville’s Grace Lutheran Church.

She returned to Cullman January 15, 1960. Under the earlier positive influence of the sisters of Sacred Heart Academy, she was inspired to attend Sacred Heart College in 1965 and graduated summa cum laude from St. Bernard College in 1969. She credits them with the life lessons that gave her the confidence to become who she was. Hazel was employed at the Cullman County Department of Human Resources from June 1969 to 1975. It later became necessary for her to manage Karter Real Estate and Home Builders, as well as Karter Rentals. She was Trustee of the Arthur Karter Trust from 1980 until 1998.

For many years she served St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. She was appointed to a 3 year term on St Paul’s School Board, a member of St Paul’s Choir 1960-1998. She was the first woman elected to serve on St. Paul’s Church Council and the chairperson of Parish Education Committee for 3 years, then elected secretary of the Council for an additional 3 year term. Hazel served for many years on St. Paul’s Scholarship Fund Committee. She was a member of the Organ Committee, raising the money for the organ in the sanctuary of St. Paul’s Church. She was a member of the Sunshine Club and Lydia Prayer Circle. She organized the “Joy” support group for single women, and hosted a “Care” Group Bible study in her home from 1988 to 1991.

Hazel served on the Board of Directors for the Cullman Chamber of Commerce and served under two mayors on the Cullman Planning Commission Appeals Board. She was the first female member of the Cullman Home Builders Association and worked with the Association for 15 years. Under the leadership of Sheriff Tyler Roden, she was a graduate of the first Sheriff’s Citizen Academy of Cullman County in June 1997 at the age of 71!

Because of age and health considerations, she moved to Etowah, North Carolina, July 14, 2002, to be near her daughter. She found great joy in worship at Grace Lutheran Church and Etowah Presbyterian Church. She loved attending the Flat Rock Play House and the Hendersonville Symphony. Close to her heart were the many friends and the fellowship they shared in her community of Etowah’s Reach.

Hazel Karter Daniel passed from this life gently and with dignity at her home in Etowah, North Carolina on Thursday, June 20 at 3:25 p.m. Funeral services for Mrs. Daniel, age 87, will be held in her home church at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Cullman, Alabama on Saturday, June 29, 2013 at 3:00 p.m.

The family will receive friends and guests one hour prior to the service where the body will be in state in the church parlor.

Moss-Service Funeral Home will be in charge of all arrangements, and burial follows immediately after the service at the Cullman City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul’s School or Four Seasons Hospice, 571 South Allen Road, Flat Rock, NC 28731.
