Mrs. Lorraine passed away Sunday, Sept. 30, at UAB Medical Center in Birmingham, following a brief illness. She was born March 27, 1922, in Cullman to Johnny and Martha Lay Harbison.
She was preceded in death by her parents; along with her first husband, John Dix of Cullman; her second husband, Jules Fisher of Oakland, Calif.; her third husband, Roy Pickerill of Corona, Calif.; three sisters, Flora Moore, Laura Griggs and Madge Davis; and three brothers, Thomas Harbison, Hill Harbison and Melvin Harbison.
Lorraine is survived by her sister, Theolene Moon; her sister-in-law, Frances Harbison; along with 19 living nieces and nephews, including, Jean Wood (deceased), Elouise Oden, Jackie Walker, David Griggs, Red Griggs, Tommy Griggs, Becky Griggs, Glenn Davis (deceased), Roger Davis, Alton Davis, Teddy Davis, Wallace Harbison, Hollis Harbison (deceased), Brenda Carnes, Michael Harbison, Delane Milligan, Rhonda Harbison, Terry Harbison, Deborah Shear, Kathy Davis, Winfield Moon Jr., Amy McClenny; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Lorrie developed a love of travel at a young age and after spending some of her adult years in Cullman, she traveled to California and remained there for the next 70 or so years. It was there she met her husband, Roy, who was a decorated World War II veteran and had received the Purple Heart Medal. They were involved in a thriving motel business in Santa Clarita, Calif. Upon Roy’s death, Lorraine returned to Cullman in 2001. She remained active in all aspects of veterans affairs. She continued her love of travel by visiting 30-plus countries and 48 states. In fact, she was planning a trip to Rome, Italy, at the end of October with a First Baptist Church tour group.
Lorrie was a very colorful character around town. All who came in contact with her enjoyed her company. Even at 90 years old, she was in good health, drove her own car, and traveled to many foreign countries. She was particularly proud of her heritage and to be from Cullman. She loved the Harbison name and all of her extended families. In fact, upon one visit to the CRMC Emergency Room, she noticed that an attendant’s last name was Harbison; she never stopped talking to him and commented that his wife was “lucky to be married to a Harbison.” Lorrie will truly be missed by her family and friends.
Pallbearers will be Wallace Harbison, Rolland Oden, Buddy Shear, Jimmy Walker, Joey Shear, Richard Collins and Jake Shear.
