Born in Manchester, Ala., Dec. 22, 1921, Maurice Fowler Hudson was the son of the late Rosie Drummond Barton Hudson and Walter William Hudson.
He was preceded in death by his brothers Elmer Ray, Burey G., Jack C. and Norman Hudson; and by his sisters Pernie Hudson Olsen and Callie Barton Twilley.
He is survived by his wife, Ella Mae Green Hudson; and his sister, Lenear Hudson Stewart; and by numerous cousins and nieces and nephews to whom he was often more of a beloved father figure than just an uncle.
Maurice married the love of his life, Ella Mae Green, Feb. 16, 1947, and spent 63 wonderful years with his soul-mate. "Mouse" to his friends, he attended Central Elementary, Walker County High and Walker College in Jasper, Ala., and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He came back with many good stories of flying "over the hump" above the Himalayan Mountains for the ferrying command in the China-Burma-India area. He began his golfing career prior to his enlistment at Musgrove Country Club in Jasper. After his service, he continued his love of golf as the assistant pro in Marietta, Ga., and as the pro at Cedartown, La Grange and Columbus, Ga. It has been reported that Maurice was one of the best teaching pros in the business, and several of his students have gone on to become well-known professional golfers. He retired after 15 years as the pro at the Northwood Country Club in Dallas, Texas, to pursue his interests in real estate and investing. Maurice and Ella Mae returned to Alabama in 1976 to their beloved Whetstone Creek Farm near Cullman where Maurice became the "gentleman farmer" while continuing to pursue his interests in real estate and investments, and as a member of the Board of Directors at Merchants Bank of Cullman. Maurice and Ella Mae are members of the First United Methodist Church of Cullman.
Maurice passed peacefully from this life at his home at Whetstone Creek Farm at 8:35 p.m. March, 11, 2010, with his wife, Ella Mae, and friends and family at his side. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, at First United Methodist Church of Cullman, with interment at 4:30 p.m. in the Union Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery near Jasper.
Donations may be made to Maurice's favorite charity, the Sheriff's Boys' and Girls' Ranch in lieu of flowers.
The family is very fortunate that we have shared so many wonderful years with our beloved "Mouse."
We are thankful for the fullness and richness of the long life with which he was blessed, and for all the lives that he has touched. We'll all miss you, Mouse, we love you.
