

Funeral services for Yvon Fisher Mathews, 91, of Crane Hill will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014, at Mt. Hope Baptist Church in Crane Hill, the Rev. Delbert Freeman officiating, with burial in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
Mrs. Mathews passed away Monday, Feb. 3, at her residence. She was born Dec. 12, 1922, in Crane Hill, to Charles Frederick and Verdie Irene Calvert Fisher. She was a lifelong church member who taught Sunday school, Bible studies, sang in the choir and served her church in many capacities.
She graduated from Cullman High School in 1941 and supported the war effort first at a factory in Birmingham and later as the wife of a serviceman. She was the postmaster at Crane Hill for many years, and retired from a clerical position at Redstone Missile Command in Huntsville. At home, her hands were never idle, in addition to cooking and house cleaning, she sewed, gardened and canned vegetables. She was a master quilter, the founding member of the Nimble Thimbles Quilt Guild in Cullman and charter member of the Heritage Quilters of Huntsville. She lived through the hard times of the Great Depression and World War II, and into the 21st century. In all areas of her life she exemplified the characteristics that Tom Brokaw so appropriately praised in his book, “The Greatest Generation.”
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clifford Mathews; brothers, Cecil and Wayne Fisher; and sisters, Gladys Fisher Burrow and Charlene Fisher Wallace.
She is survived by two daughters, Bonnie Mathews (Richard) Spencer and Jennifer Mathews (James) Bridges; son, Rick (Elizabeth) Mathews; five granddaughters, Beth Spencer (Ken) McCullough, Deborah Spencer (Alan) Garner, Jill Bridges (Brian) Orr, Johanna Bridges (Richard) Orr and Jessica Bridges (Shane) Posey; 12 great-grandchildren, Matthew McCullough, Mitchell McCullough, Spencer Garner, Emily Garner, Roxanne Orr, Gabrielle Orr, Macey Orr, Jaden Orr, Avery Orr, Hannah Hoffman, Rachel Hoffman and Will Posey; two sisters-in-law, Mae Fisher and Rachel Fisher; and several nieces and nephews.
