

Carol Shields passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, VA, after battling an infection and its effects. A resident of Culpeper, VA, since 2016, Carol was born in New York City and graduated from St. Paul’s School and Port Richmond High School in Staten Island. She worked as a phlebotomist before marrying Thomas Shields, Jr. in 1964. As their family grew, they resided in Far Rockaway, NY; Staten Island, NY; and Mountainhome, PA. After Tom’s death in 2015, Carol moved to Culpeper to be closer to family. In Culpeper, she found a loving and supportive community of friends and fellow worshipers at Reformation Lutheran Church. In addition to her husband, Carol was predeceased by her sisters Marie Jost, Joan Kaufman, and Michelle Phillips. She leaves behind her sisters Ann Baglio and Jane Sherman. Carol is survived by her seven children: Carolyn (James) Terry, Colleen (Marty) Clarke, Thomas (Lisa) Shields, Cathleen Davies, Sean Shields, Daniel (Catherine) Shields, and Caryn (Mark) Shaffer. She had fifteen grandchildren: Benjamin, Rachel, Ryan, Megan, Devin, Colin, Grace, Derek, Brandon, Aiden, Claire, Riley, Erin, Blake, and Cole. Her greatest joy was being “Mimi” to her grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held in spring 2025 at Reformation Lutheran Church in Culpeper, VA.
