He and his wife, Laurel Ann Van Horn, also of Culpeper, were happily married at Trinity Church, in NYC, almost 42 years ago this coming December.
Dee was born in Portsmouth, OH, to John Douglas and Wilma Garvey Van Horn, on August 26, 1947. He attended Wheelersburg High School, where he played varsity football as a proud Pirate. He was a teacher for over 25 years in NYC,NY, Windsor, VT, and Culpeper, Rappahannock, and Warren Counties, VA.
Dee was a wonderful and loving husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, relative, and friend. He had a terrific sense of humor and loved conversing with people and making them smile. He also loved being a teacher and coach, reading books, with poetry being a particular favorite, taking photographs of the beautiful Virginia countryside, listening to many types of music, and watching football, soccer, basketball, especially March Madness, and baseball. He coached junior varsity football at Windsor High School, in VT, and at Culpeper County High School, junior varsity basketball at Rappahannock County High School, and eighth grade basketball at Warren County Middle School. He coached youth soccer at both Rappahannock and Culpeper Counties, including two seasons as coach of the Culpeper Blue Comets (ODSL).
Along with his wife, Laurel, he leaves to cherish his memory: his beloved son, Andrew Van Horn, his beloved daughter-in-law, Katherine Lenard, and his adored grandson, Odin Van Horn, all of Philadelphia, PA, his great-aunt, Edith Hall Barnette, of Coal Grove, OH, his aunt, Mary Van Horn Gardner, of Wheelersburg, OH, his uncle, Fred Hieneman, of Sciotoville, OH, numerous cousins, in Ohio, Florida, and other places, and the many hundreds of students he taught, coached, and helped throughout his career.
He was greatly loved and will be greatly missed – more than words can say.
