

Joan was a loving wife, daughter, sister, mother and grandmother who was born in Gorham, New York on December 29, 1926. After graduating from Richmond Professional Institute, known today as VCU, she moved to Culpeper to teach, and met her future husband to whom she was happily married for 60 years.
She taught many years in the Culpeper County School system and ended her teaching career at the Culpeper Baptist Church Kindergarten. Many of her former students continue to live in the area, and would often remind her of the positive influence she had on them when their paths crossed in town.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hobart McKinley “Mac” Thomas ,Jr.; her parents, Alexander and Anna Lane; and her two older brothers, Charles Alexander Lane and Bruce Milton Lane.
Survivors include her daughter, Anne Thomas Mikula and her husband, Ned; sons Travis Herndon Thomas, and Jeffrey Lane Thomas and his wife, Nancy, all of Richmond; and eight grandchildren, Matthew, Lane, Sarah and Hobie Mikula, Sunny and Austin Thomas, and Caroline and Mac Thomas.
She enjoyed working in her flower garden, completing crossword puzzles, reading, and walking.
Memorial services will be held at the Culpeper Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 30, 2013, with Dr. Rev. Wayne Bernardo officiating. Interment will be private in Culpeper Masonic Cemetery.
