Sara Bowles Gallagher

the age of 95.

Sara was predeceased by her husband, John “Jack” Wesley Gallagher, Jr., brother David Bowles,

and her stepdaughter Sue Gretchen Gallagher Mitchell (Bill).

Sara is survived by her stepson, John Wesley Gallagher, III (Olivia), her son-in-law, George

William “Bill” Mitchell, Jr., her nephew Robert Bowles (Twyla), her niece Anne Bowles (Billy),

and a great niece, Sunny Meadows. She has five grandchildren, Scott (Roxy), Kristen, Sara, John

Wesley IV, and Rachel. She is also survived by seven great-grandchildren and one

great-great-granddaughter.

Sara was born on July 5, 1930 in Martinsville, Virginia to Daniel Leroy “Roy” and Verda

Bowles. She graduated from the University of Virginia with a Bachelor of Science degree in

Medical Technology in 1956. She worked as a medical technician at the University of Virginia in

Charlottesville, Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg, and at the Culpeper Memorial

Hospital in Culpeper, Virginia.

After retiring, she graciously gave her time to volunteer to numerous organizations, including the

Culpeper Hospital Auxiliary cafe and thrift store, the Culpeper Library, the USDA Food Bank,

and various cancer walks. She was an active member of the Baptist Church in Salem, the

Culpeper United Methodist Church, and Mitchell’s Presbyterian Church.

She loved to travel, knit and cross-stitch, read, attend aerobic classes, go on walks every night

after dinner, and was always available to help others. Her kind smile and gentle nature warmed

the hearts of all who knew her.

The family will hold a memorial service will be held at Mitchell’s Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, April 8th at

2:00pm. The church is located at 12229 Mitchell Road, Mitchells, VA 22729. All are welcome to

attend and celebrate Sara’s life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Mitchell’s

Presbyterian Church (at P.O. Box 98, Mitchells, VA 22719) or to a charity of your choosing. The

family would like to thank the caring staff of The Culpeper for their support of her over the

years.
