Grace Hiney, just shy of her 95th birthday, died April 27, 2026 with family by her side.
Grace was born on May 22, 1931, in New York City, to Grace Sturges Conley and Richard Ehret Conley. She grew up with her three sisters Carrel, Elaine and Joan, in Ridgefield, Connecticut, but also lived temporarily in the San Francisco area during World War II, where their father was posted.
She attended Sacred Heart Schools in Connecticut and San Francisco, before attending Newton College of the Sacred Heart in Boston. After graduating with a degree in English, she lived with girlfriends in New York City for a few years.
Grace moved to Los Angeles in the late 1950’s, where she met her husband John “Jack” Hiney in Westwood. The two married in August 1964 in Patagonia, Arizona, and celebrated 36 years together before he died in 2002. She is survived by her daughter Erin Lynch (John) and son Richard Hiney (Mayora) and her grandchildren Masury, Jack and Keavy Lynch and Ciaran and Fintan Hiney.
Grace and Jack moved to Pacific Palisades in 1965. Grace worked at Desmond’s Department Store until she and Jack owned A to Z Rentals for a period of time. After that business closed in 1971, Grace was hired to sell advertising by the Palisades Post. She loved working “in town” where her kids could come by her office on their bikes after school.
Grace’s career spanned more than four decades as the Restaurant Critic and Head of Advertising for the Palisadian Post, and later, Palisades News. While selling advertising for the paper took Grace throughout the Westside of Los Angeles, interacting with businesses small and large, her restaurant revues took her as far as Agoura, Malibu, Glendale and Pasadena. Grace's reviews occasionally included the theatrical arts including the Theater Palisades. She loved her job and her clients.
Grace was beloved by her co-workers for her generous spirit, always pleasant personality, and her delicious Irish Soda Bread, which she would make for office staff each St. Patrick’s Day.
Grace loved going to the theater, ballet and concerts. She was involved with the Palisades Garden Club and the Alumni Association of the Sacred Heart. Grace also sold advertising for the annual Palisadian Americanism Parade Association 4th of July program about which she was passionate. She traveled extensively, but her favorite vacations were the annual family trip to Yosemite National Park and spending holidays at the family ranch in Patagonia, Arizona.
After spending many years at Corpus Christi Church, Grace became a devoted parishioner at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, where she was an active participant and volunteer.
Grace was the embodiment of her name. She was warm and welcoming to all she met. She opened her home to countless friends and extended family members. There was nothing more appreciated than a dinner invitation from Grace. She was the ultimate hostess and a generous and giving friend.
Though she will be missed by all, she will be especially missed by her immediate family.
Funeral Services will be held at St. Martin of Tour Catholic Church at Sunset and Saltair on Saturday, June 20, 2026 at 11 am.
