Amalia Mantzuranis

The youngest of seven children, Amalia was born May 2, 1919, in the small village of Fourna, Greece, to Demetra and Dimitri Trahanee, and passed away on Wednesday, February 11, 2015 in Dallas, Texas. The Trisagion prayer service and visitation will be Tuesday evening, February 17, at 7pm, and the funeral services will be Wednesday February 18, 2015 at 10:30 a.m., both at The Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 13555 Hillcrest Road at Alpha Rd., Dallas, TX 75240

Amalia came to the U.S.A. for an arranged marriage to James Antonio Mantzuranis, on December 28, 1947 to whom she was married for 55 years till his death in 2003 at the age of 96. Amalia was proud to be one of the oldest and most devoted members of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. She worked until retirement at the age of 75 with her husband, “Jimmy”, in their Garden Food Store and later in her son Tony’s restaurant “Little Gus’” on Lower Greenville Avenue. Her sweet personality, stunning blue eyes and smile, and her award for “D Magazine’s Best Baklava” joined her to be among the legends of Lower Greenville Ave. One of the happiest highlights of her life was the day she became a United States citizen in 1964.

God, Jesus Christ, the Church, and her family were Amalia’s joys and compass in a life of purity and service. Amalia is survived by her two sons and their wives, Antonio “Tony” Dimitri Mantzuranis and wife Teresa Gentry, and Christos Dimitri Mantzuranis and wife Genny; granddaughters, Christina Alexandra Helwig and her husband Carter; Rachel Amelia Mantzuranis and her fiancé Tony Vanzant; grandson James Christos Mantzuranis and his wife Catherine; great-grandsons, Griffin Wood Helwig, Cole Collins Mantzuranis, Vail Butler Mantzuranis, and Grayson Lee Vanzant; step grandsons, Michael Alred and Timothy Stuart.
