Virginia Anne Douthit Snodgrass was born on November 28, 1929 to Harold and Clarice (Rogers) Douthit in Clarinda, Iowa. Anne died on August 21, 2012 after a long illness.
Anne had an amazing spirit and lived a life full of achievement and adventure. She started working as a teen in her father’s clothing store in Clarinda, Iowa. Anne moved to Denver to attend Colorado Women’s College, which became part of the University of Denver while she was there. She received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a major in Accounting in 1951. She passed the exam to become a CPA in Colorado in 1958, but was unable to find work at that time as a CPA because of her gender. She did find work with an accounting firm doing research, so at least she was working in her chosen field. Anne also started studying law after being encouraged to do so because of her high score on the law section of the CPA exam.
It was during her time in Colorado that Anne met her future husband, Scott Snodgrass. They were married on November 28, 1959. Shortly after they married, they relocated to Scott’s home state of Texas, settling in Dallas. Anne became a licensed CPA in Texas and continued to work in public accounting while she continued studying law. She received her Juris Doctor from Southern Methodist University in 1964. Anne’s concentration was in tax law, and she worked in the tax departments of Texas Instruments, Gifford-Hill, and Jimmy Ling. Anne eventually started her own tax practice which she ran from February, 1978 until December, 1995.
Anne participated in many professional organizations and, because of her organizational skills, held state-wide and national offices including National President, American Society of Women Accountants, 1961-62; President, Dallas Chapter ASWA, 1962-63; Secretary and Vice President, Dallas Chapter, Texas Society of CPAs, 1974-76; and National Treasurer, National Association of Women Lawyers, 1969-71. She was a member of the American Bar Association, the Texas Bar Association, the American Institute of CPAs, and the Texas Society of CPAs.
Anne had a very generous spirit, and was actively involved in many philanthropic organizations, including PEO, Zonta Club of Dallas, the Open Door Multilingual Preschool at Grace United Methodist Church of Dallas, and other organizations supporting women’s rights and education, civil rights and children’s education. She was also a great supporter of the arts, including the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, Native American arts, and great literature.
Anne always had a great passion for travel, and found great joy after retirement in her travels with Ken. She loved visiting family and friends and especially enjoyed the Texas coast, the Southwest, especially Taos, NM, Colorado, New York City and her hometown. Anne was also an avid bird watcher.
Even though Anne was childless, she was a mother to many. She was quick to share her hearty laugh, and maybe a martini, with those fortunate enough to be involved in her wide circle of family and friends. She was loved and will be truly missed by so many.
Anne was preceded in death by her parents, husband Scott Snodgrass, and brother John (Jack) Douthit. She is survived by her significant-other, Ken Gordon, Dallas, his son, Scott Gordon, Dallas, brother Robert Douthit, Melissa, TX, nieces Debbie Peterson, Kansas City, MO, Donna Lu Douthit, Trimble, MO, Beverly Douthit, Melissa, TX, Laura Mowery, Harrisburg, PA, Amanda Douthit, Richardson, TX and nephew Stephen Douthit, Flower Mound, TX.
Anne’s family would like to thank the staff of Walnut Place for their loving care during the past three years of her life. The family requests that memorials be directed to the Open Door Preschool at Grace United Methodist Church, Dallas, TX or the Heard Museum, McKinney, TX.
Family will receive friends at Sparkman Hillcrest Funeral Home Monday, August 28, 2012 5:00p.m. to 7:00p.m.
Funeral service will be held Tuesday, August 29, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at Grace United Methodist Church 4105 Junius St. Dallas, TX. 75246. Interment will be Wednesday in Cuero, TX.
