

received her formal education in the Dallas public schools: J.W. Ray, B.F. Darrell and Booker T.
Washington High School. After graduating from high school in 1953, she attended Bishop College in
Marshall Texas. Married to C.L. Jones for 27 years, she raised a family before continuing her education
and receiving an Associate Degree from El Centro college, earning a bachelor’s degree from Paul Quinn
College and a Texas Teacher’s Certificate in Elementary education and Elementary English from the
Dallas Independent School District in 1998.
Bettie has been a member of Holy Cross Parish since 1965. She was a former president of the Alter
Society and later served as an alter server. She loved the church and Father Tim.
She was an avid golfer until her illness with COPD, a member of the Cedar Crest Ladies Golf Association
and the first female to be accepted in the all male Dallas Hilliard’s Golf Association. She also was a
member of the Washington-Lincoln Alumni Association, the Po-ke-no club and the S.D. Bingo Group.
Bettie is survived by a son Michael (Carol), daughters, Cheryl, Jeanne and Charlotte. Grandchildren:
Tanya (John), Sean, Corey (Artisha), Robert III, Charisse, Crystal (Jeremy), Michelle (Eric), Christopher and Myesha. Sixteen Great grandchildren and One great-great grandchild. One sister deceased, Birdie Smith. Two living Gretchen Carter and Mary Blair, one Brother, Robert (Callie), several nieces and nephews and her adoptive family, the Flemings of Mobile, Alabama of whom Donnie Dillard is a member.
Thank you, Donnie for the many meals you brought me during my illness. My very best, loyal and faithful
friend Nancy Brown, my lifelong friend for 79 years from 1st grade through my 1st year of college, Stanley
Chambers miles apart didn’t keep us from communicating, thank you to the most wonderful doctor I
have ever known, Dr. Mark Mallard, Rita, Sisty and my many, many friends, too many to mention by name.
