Bettye Jo was born in Dallas on October 25, 1933, to Silas (Sy) Yoakum Guthrie and Josephine Madeleine (Christensen) Guthrie.
She attended Sacred Heart for grade school and was a graduate of The Hockaday School. She was something of an athlete, participating in field hockey and tennis. She attended Incarnate Word College in San Antonio.
Bettye Jo loved to travel and spent many years taking road trips, driving across the United States with her mother. However, she was always drawn to her hometown of Dallas. She met her husband of 60 years, Jerry, a lawyer, at a wedding and married soon after in 1959.
Bettye Jo’s interests included travel; volunteering at her children’s schools; writing letters, postcards and thank-you notes; and tennis and gin rummy with her favorite group of card players. However, her life was truly centered around her family. She loved and adored her parents, her brothers, her husband, and her children and grandchildren. She was such an active and supportive grandmother, helping with babysitting and attending school performances, award ceremonies, athletic events, and grandparents’ days. She practiced many individual acts of kindness and generosity, never seeking anything in return. She was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church.
Bettye Jo is preceded in death by her parents, her older brother, Sy, her younger brother, George, and her daughter, Betty Jo. She is survived by her husband, Jerry; her daughter, Karen (Marie) Lastelick Higginbotham, and her husband, Tim Higginbotham, and her son, Joseph Jerome (JJ) Lastelick, and his wife, Jane; her grandchildren, Joseph Knox Higginbotham, Hattie Louise Higginbotham, Tanner Reece Lastelick, Trevor Brennan Lastelick, Luke Meade Lastelick, and Ryan Robert Lastelick; her sister-in-law, Louise Lorraine Lastelick, and many adored and adoring nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Jerry & Betty Jo Lastelick Family Faculty Fund at Jesuit College Preparatory, 12345 Inwood Road, Dallas, TX 75244, or to the charity of your choice. The family will have a private Funeral Mass.
