Beverly J. Baker, of Plano Texas, passed away on August 20, 2023, at her home surrounded by loving family. Whip-smart with a wry sense of humor, Beverly was filled with integrity and fiercely dedicated to her family. She was born on June 30, 1930, in Dallas Texas, to Fred and Helen Moore, attended Sunset High School in Oak Cliff and North Texas State College (now the University of North Texas) in Denton, obtaining her degree in education in 1951. Upon graduation she married her sweetheart from age 13, Gordon Baker. Soon thereafter Beverly began her career teaching 4th grade. Her patience, compassion and intelligence made a lasting impression on her students, with many of them sending her thank you notes and sharing success stories for decades after attending her classes.
Beverly and Gordon lived in Laredo and Miami during Gordon’s medical internships and residency before returning to Dallas, with Beverly teaching full-time to support the family. They had their first child, Shannon, in 1958, followed by Rick in 1965. She retired from teaching and placed her relentless energy into raising her children, supporting her husband, and decorating their lovely home. After her husband’s unexpected death in 1978 she remained focused on her children, and eventually grandchildren and great grandchildren. Throughout her life Beverly remained an avid reader and superb needleworker, with a great eye for style, and shared her passions with everyone lucky enough to cross her path.
Our family is incredibly grateful for Beverly’s long life with us, and feels so fortunate that every child, grandchild, and great grandchild was able to visit and enjoy her company during her final days.
Beverly is survived by daughter Shannon Baker Werthmann and son-in-law Craig Werthmann of Plano Texas, son Rick Baker and daughter-in-law Chris Baker of Pflugerville Texas, niece Georgia “Cookie” Thompson of Richardson Texas, granddaughters Hilary Swalm of Allen Texas and Brittany Newnham of Stamford Connecticut, grandsons Chandler Werthmann of Dallas Texas, and Brian and Zachary Baker of Pflugerville Texas, great grandsons Liam and Ryan Newnham, Sterling Swalm, and great granddaughter Madison Swalm.
