Charles David Rose, known to most as “Charlie”, passed away on February 27, 2018 in Lewisville, Texas following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Charlie was born December 28, 1939 in Corpus Christi and raised on a farm in Pioneer, Louisiana with his three siblings. He attended Grades 1-12 at Pioneer High School, and then immediately after graduation joined the Air Force and served in Korea. Following his service in the Air Force, he attended Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, Louisiana where he graduated with a BS in Physics, Magna Cum Laude with Departmental Honors in Mathematics and Physics. Charlie was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity at Tech, where he served as President his senior year.
In 1964 Charlie moved to Shreveport, Louisiana, where he met and married the love of his life and his wife of 52 years, Mary Ann McKinney. After Charlie and Mary Ann married and had their first child, Charlie went to work at Los Alamos Laboratory in New Mexico as a nuclear physicist. Charlie and Mary Ann then moved to Monroe, Louisiana where they raised their 3 children. Once their children were grown, Charlie and Mary Ann moved to the Dallas, Texas area, where they remained until his death.
In the early 1980’s Charlie began what would be a lifelong career in geostatistics, specializing in coal sampling. For many years Charlie worked as an independent consultant, and then in 2003 joined SGS North America, an international testing company, as VP of Technical Services in their Minerals Services Division. Charlie enjoyed traveling all over the globe while working for SGS, and did so up until his retirement at age 76 following his pancreatic cancer diagnosis. Charlie was well known as an expert in his field, and developed statistical methods that have been adopted by international standards bodies for testing sampling systems bias, as well as statistical methods for the calibration and testing of online analysis instruments. During his career Charlie published several important white papers, spoke at many industry seminars, and was often called as an expert witness in legal cases where coal sampling methods were in dispute.
