Christine Linda Smith was born in Carthage, TX on April 24, 1931 to Ernestine and Harvey Lee Anderson. She graduated high school with honors and attended Prairie View A&M College of Texas, where she received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. She later attended the University of San Francisco and earned both a Master of Arts in library sciences and a Master of Education.
Christine met Dr. George Lee Smith II while attending Prairie View A&M. They married in 1954 and she became the mother to two children – first Deborah and then George III. The family resided in Menlo Park, California where she began her career as an elementary school teacher and later a principal in the Palo Alto school district. She was an exemplary educator for over 30 years and was an exceptional woman of her day.
Christine loved her family deeply. While her career was cut short due to illness, she is remembered for her excellent work and for her love of her family. She lived a full and happy life.
Christine was preceded in death by her loving parents as well as her five siblings, Lee Hera Anderson, Cecil Nealey, Jewel Anderson, Lula Mae Anderson, Opal Anderson and May Bell Anderson. She is survived by her beloved children, Deborah Haynes Brannon and George Lee Smith III, and her two grandchildren, Jason Christopher Haynes and his wife, Elizabeth C. Haynes, and Jina Nicole Haynes. Other survivors include her sister-in-law, Ethel Lee Smith and family; Clifton Abraham and family; Brian Smith and family; Desmond Hicks and family; and many more nieces and nephews. She will be remembered as a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, and friend to many.
Christine loved her family and was loved so much in return. We will truly miss her love and care that she freely gave to all of us. Christine, our hearts are forever with you.
