Nicknamed by his father and known to family and friends, “Sam” was born in Tulsa on October
5, 1927 to Arthur M. and Blanche G. (Hanley) Brown, the youngest of two sisters and a brother.
He was raised in Tulsa, attended Central High School and served in the Army in the Aleutian
Islands of Alaska immediately following World War II. Upon returning home, he soon began his
43 year career with Skinner Brothers oil field equipment supplier, first in Tulsa and then for
many years based in Dallas. Sam drove up and down the highways and backroads through every
county in Texas and into some nearby states as the company’s factory sales representative,
company catalogs and contact name roll-a-dex by his side.
Sam met and married Faye (Lowrey) in Dallas in August 1963, and raised two sons, Gregory and
Paul. They were a busy family with school and church activities, sports and Boy Scouts. Sam
was a lifetime member of the VFW, and a longtime active member of the American Legion and
the Elks Lodge. He had a passion for history and maps, trains and airplanes. He would read each
issue of the National Geographic magazine When he retired in the early 1990s, Sam and Faye
returned to the Tulsa area to be near family. They enjoyed RV traveling, cruises and vacations as
far as Hawaii and Spain, and wintering in the Rio Grande Valley and southern Arizona. Several
years ago, they made their home in University Village Retirement Center in Tulsa, making many
new friends and enjoying the activities. Sam was quite the wii bowler, one time achieving a
perfect 300 game.
Sam was a compassionate and caring person, never meeting a stranger. And always with a wry,
dry sense of humor! He was committed to helping others, and often did random, unknown acts
of kindness. He has been the best example of doing good. We will remember his loyalty to us
and that he always kept his word.
A loving son, husband, father, uncle and grandfather, Sam was predeceased by his siblings,
Arthur H. Brown (1968), Mary K. Skinner (1995) and Lorraine H. Fortner (2001); his sons
Gregory Brown (1981) and Paul Brown (1990); niece Deborah Skinner (1964) and wife Grace
(1960). He is survived by his wife Faye; his grandson Chad Brown (wife Amanda); his niece
Marilyn (Brown) “Lyn” Schuler and nephew Raymond A. Brown (wife Brigid) and their
families; special friends Dan McGonigal and Ron Herschberger, and many other dear friends.
Visitation and graveside services will be held Friday, October 18th at Laurel Land Cemetery in
Dallas, Texas. A celebration of life will be held at the University Village chapel at a future date.
We thank God for our memories of him and his life to grace our days and light our paths.
"Don’t grieve for me, for now I’m free
I’m following the path God laid for me.
I took his hand when I heard Him call
I turned my back and left it all.
My life’s been full, I savored much;
Good friends, good times, a loved one’s touch.
If my parting has left a void
Then fill it with remembered joy."
