Born July 14, 1938 in Tralee, County Kerry, Ireland, David was the son of Sarah and Patrick Barry. One of 11 children, he grew up with a love for family that only grew stronger throughout his life. In his early years, David worked for his family’s business, Barry’s Bakery, which was known throughout Tralee for its freshly baked bread and pastries. He treasured his home country of Ireland and made it a point to not only regularly visit his extensive family there, but also to bring his Irish traditions with him when he moved to the United States in 1962 at age 21.
David joined the United States Army in 1962 and was assigned to the 2nd & 3rd Armored Division. He was stationed in Germany during the Vietnam War and later served at Fort Hood in Killeen, Texas. His ability to tell stories about his time in the Army was legendary and he always spoke fondly of his fellow soldiers stationed with him. After proudly serving our nation, he was honorably discharged and moved to New York City where he started his lifelong career at American Airlines and also met his wife, Barbara Regan Barry. They were married April 29, 1972 and shortly thereafter moved to their home in Texas where they started their family.
In true Irish form, David never met a person he didn’t like and built lifelong friendships during his time at American Airlines and within his community. He was an active member of Mary Immaculate Catholic Church, an avid golfer, a proud supporter of the Dallas chapter of the Rose of Tralee organization and number one fan of both Gaelic soccer and the Dallas Cowboys.
But more than anything, David loved his family and treasured the time he spent with his children, Sean Barry and Colleen Leach, and especially his three grandchildren who called him Grandpa and loved him dearly.
