Doris Ruthell Bryant Camp, 97, of Fort Worth, TX, peacefully passed away on May 12, 2025. She was known for her love of family, Christian faith, generosity, kindness, wit, and sweet tooth.
Doris was born to Gentry L. and Eldie (Richburg) Bryant in Colorado City, Texas on January 13, 1928. She was the third of six children, four of whom were boys and two girls. She had 15 aunts and uncles and numerous first cousins. The Bryant family moved quite often, usually into small west Texas towns. Despite moving every school year, Doris skipped a couple of grades and graduated high school at the age of 16.
Upon graduation from Big Spring High School in 1944, Doris went to work on an army base as an assistant cashier in the PX where her older sister, Alene, was the cashier. Feeling the need to help her family, she sent money home from each paycheck.
At the age of 17, Doris moved east to Fort Worth, TX, to attend business school where she honed her skills in typing and shorthand to prepare for a career in the secretarial field. She moved to Dallas at age 19 and worked downtown. Doris had several jobs before joining Joseph T. Ryerson & Sons where she was the Office Manager, then the Executive Secretary to the President. She retired in 1989 after 32 years at Ryerson.
On April 17, 1948, Doris married Glen Camp in Dallas, Texas. They met on a blind date six months earlier, set up by her best friend, Wanda, and his cousin, Jim. Doris and Glen soon added children, Candy, Glenda, Mary, and Susan, to their union. Later in life, Doris and Glen were involved with the International Rescue Committee. They sponsored many Vietnamese families and later adopted a 14-year-old girl from the country. The couple were married 49 years prior to his death in 1997. They enjoyed traveling the country together in their RV and even took a few international trips.
Doris loved to quilt and completed many hand-sewn ones in her lifetime. She finished her first solo quilt at the age of 9, much of which had been pieced while hiding up in a chinaberry tree on Sundays – a big no no to work on a Sunday! Doris enjoyed games, bowling, reading, teaching children in Sunday School, playing Tetris, played on the church softball team, and watched reruns of “Wheel of Fortune” and “Murder She Wrote”.
A love and generosity for her family and friends was reflected in her life of faith and prayers as she endeavored to lead them by example toward a closer relationship with God. She accepted Christ as a young teen and dreamed of being a missionary when she was a girl.
Doris is survived by daughters, Candace Puckett of Weatherford, TX, Glenda Yeats (Tom) of Millsap, TX, Mary Overall of Irving, TX, Susan Essary (Tim) of Fort Worth, TX, and Nancy Nyguen (K.T.) of Irving, TX; nine grandchildren, Melinda DeCorte, Tony DeCorte (Jennifer), Jenny Moore (T.J.), Mike Overall (Cari), Keri Overall, David Dietz (Jessica), Jonathan Dietz, John Nyguen, and Paul Nyguen; eight great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Neal Bryant (Virginia), Alene Bradley (Ed), Ralph Bryant (Ina Mae), G.L. Bryant, Johnny Bryant (Judy), husband Glen Camp, and grandson Josh Yeats.
