Dorothy Thomas Lipscomb, age 99, of Dallas, Texas, passed away peacefully on November 5, 2025, just seventeen days shy of her 100th birthday. She was born on November 22, 1925, in Mt. Pleasant, Texas. For over 75 years, she called Dallas home where she built a life filled with family, friendships, and community involvement.
Dorothy married Matthew Gardner Lipscomb Jr., and for over 60 years they shared a life of adventure and devotion to their three daughters. They traveled extensively and reveled in exploring new places with friends and family. Dorothy and Gardner were longtime members of the Dallas Country Club, Highland Park Presbyterian Church and Little Sandy Hunting and Fishing Club, where they spent many treasured weekends with their children, and later their grandchildren.
Dorothy had a deep appreciation for learning and beauty, reflected in her love of art, gardening, and interior design. Her desire to learn throughout her life was further reflected in her long-standing memberships in the Dallas Woman’s Club, The Heritage Club, and the Dallas Garden Club. Her home and garden were graceful expressions of her thoughtful eye and warm spirit—welcoming, refined, and filled with touches of her gentle creativity.
For more than fifty years, Dorothy enjoyed playing bridge with the Thursday Afternoon Bridge Club, although in later years bridge became a sideline to lunch and the latest gossip. She maintained an active lifestyle well into her later years, walking daily and embracing each day with energy and enthusiasm.
One of her greatest joys was time spent in the kitchen with her grandchildren. She delighted in sharing family recipes and the stories behind them, passing down traditions through food, laughter, and togetherness.
Dorothy is survived by her daughters, Linda Lipscomb and Nancy Lipscomb Groth (Jim), both of Dallas, Texas. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Dorothy Kendall Bond of Boulder, Colorado; Carrie Coffee Conley (Brendan) of Washington, D.C.; and Mary Gardner Coffee Millsap (Allen) of Birmingham, Alabama; her brother Sam Thomas (Dodie) and nieces Medora Thomas Boone, Trilby Thomas Fulco and Kathryn Ferguson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Matthew Gardner Lipscomb, Jr.; her daughter, Elizabeth Lipscomb Coffee; her brother, Bill Thomas, and her parents, Iva Black Thomas and Fred Clancy Thomas.
Private services are planned, and in lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to MD Anderson Cancer Center in the memory of Elizabeth Lipscomb Coffee or to T. Boone Pickens Hospice and Palliative Care Center.
