I have some of the best memories of Phil and Liz coming to Bainbridge for a visit.  She was such a lovely and kind person. Our prayers go you Kim and Phil.  Miss all of you.

Remembrance of Lisa

My fondest remembrance of Lisa was her dedicated and loving care of our mother,
Louise, after her stroke. Lisa took on the responsibility for relocating Louise from
Seattle to Dallas.  She researched the Dallas area for a homelike, well equipped convalescing home when it became apparent Mom would need 24 hour overseeing.
Every morning on her way to work, Lisa would stop to visit Mom, hold a special
special treat up to her lips, plant a kiss on her cheek, than proceed to work.
She told me that one morning in her rush, she’d been given a speeding ticket.  
She contested; explaining to the judge her `morning visits to Mother` schedule. 
He responded with `every morning you do this?’ Lisa reassured him.  NO ticket.

On weekends, Mom enjoyed the comforts of Lisa’s home, or other planned outings. 
Her birthdays were a special event. Celebrations included colorful bobbing balloons;
a layer cake entwined with frosted flower creations on top and sides with lighted 
candles; all confirmed via photos from Lisa.  Holidays included.
  
Mom lived to be 91 years due to Lisa’s loving care and inspiration.  Both Mom and
Lisa are petite women sharing a doll-like appearance with soft watchful eyes, 
welcoming smiles and gracious manner.   They differed only in coloring, Mom was brunette with brown-eyes; inherited by brother Karl.  

I had the opportunity to visit with Lisa in mid-December and was relieved that she
looked so well, maybe a little frail; but she had plans and things to do.  The 3 of us, 
Kim, Lisa and I  (arm-in-arm) strolled a local `mall’ to complete Lisa’s last minute Christmas shopping.  The next day, we drove to the Dallas Arboretum and visited
the estate home decorated for Christmas.  We strolled the grounds, down the winding pathways pushing Lisa in a wheelchair, until she decided to reverse the position; she would walk and push the chair.  Our journey ended at the Gift Shop.  Lisa and Kim quietly consulting on which items might complete her shopping list.

Our drive home was circuitous, Kim was the driver. Lisa’s directions revealed via
familiar landmarks, roads and cell calls to Phil. There was some experimentation with right and left turns; but happily arriving at Spring Meadow Lane well before dark.
It had been a wonderful day.

Later at the hospital, Kim and Phil graciously allowed me to speak several more times
with Lisa.  Brief reminiscences of experiences shared with mother, father, brother and
4-legged critters and `I love you.’  She responded with a sweet quiet sigh…

Dear Sister, Auf Wiedersehen

Dear Phil and Kim,
 I can’t remember our actual first meeting, but Lisa (Liz, Lisbet, Lizzy Girl, my names for her in the past) and I became friends through our association in Phrateres, a social and service organization for independent women (living off campus) at the University of Washington.  While we were not in the “Greek” system, we were nevertheless, included in some of the activities sponsored by the Pan Hellenic conference. We helped support and man the campus blood drive as one example, and we shared the Dean of Women students as our advisor.  We had an office in the HUB (the student union building).  Our group elected officers:  President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer.  Both Liz and I were officers of this group and that is how our friendship began.  Having this kind of an association was vital in helping individuals who did not live on campus find and foster friendships in a university as large as the University of Washington, where freshman classes could be 200 or 300 students.
 The office in the HUB was a place for us to get together on an informal basis, eat lunch, or just “hang-out” and talk, allowing friendships to be found.   As officers we and our advisor searched out ways to serve our members, foster service projects at the university, arrange dances and exchanges with fraternities and independent men’s groups on campus, and interact with the international chapters of Phrateres. 
 Although we were, also students in the same course of study—Elementary Education—working toward a career as teachers and sharing some classes in common, our friendship flourished through Phrateres.  Soon our friendship expanded from just being at the U to visiting at each other’s homes, going out together and riding around in her VW bug (which in the winter was none too warm because her heater didn’t work very well)..  At other times she rode with me in what my brother called his “1935 EL Camino” to advertise some upcoming event. 
 Her older brother and sister were already out of the home by then, so I was treated like another daughter in her home, where her mother called her “Lisbet”, or “Lizzy Girl” and fed us wonderful food, and her dad enjoyed engaging us in conversations on some point of interest, or, current, or historical event. 
 We planned a trip to Europe when we graduated.  As it turned out, I ended up going to Europe with my husband, and Liz had to find another friend to go with her.  We actually went to Europe at the same time, just with different people.  Although we kept in contact, our lives diverged with me working and raising a daughter and son, and Liz working and trying out different places to visit and live.  We still maintained contact through letters, or by phone.  When we did get to be together, it was as if we had just ended our conversation a few minutes, or days before, even though our last face-to-face conversation could have been months, or years before.  I remember one lunch date that started at noon and ended at midnight.
 Visiting with Lizzy last summer was just the same.  Our time together was not nearly long enough.  However, little did I know, or even imagine how important that time was.  To me, she appeared just the same as she always appeared when we got together.  She never seemed to age, or change.  I am fortunate that I can recall her laughing and enjoying dinner in my home together with Phil, Richard and me, and I can “see” her walking through the sunshine with me in Edmonds, with the sparkling Puget Sound and the majestic Olympic Mountains in front of us.  She was contemplating other trips, because we visited Rick Steves’ “Europe through the Back Door” office on that same walk.
 As, always, Liz was ever thoughtful in bringing a “thank you” gift when she came to dinner.  It was a planter filled with a “little thrill, fill and spill”.  (Thrill, the tall plants; fill, the plants filling the main part of the planter; and spill, the plants hanging over the edge.) I enjoyed reliving our fun time together every time I looked at it and watered it during the summer.  I brought the planter into the house to preserve the plants through our periodic cold and snowy winter, and again fondly recalled the fun and her generosity as I observed and watered that planter.  Later, when I found out that Lizzy Girl was ill, my prayer for her was voiced every time I took care of these plants.  I am glad to have this keepsake.
 Now my prayers are for you and for those who miss her so much.  May we all be blessed with the very good memories she engendered in all of us.  My thanks and prayers to you both for the loving care you gave her in her most trying time.

I just wanted to express my bereavement. The obituary in the Dallas News was very good. I didn't know that much about her but I know Phil was very attentive and supportive of her. I know Harold appreciated her, too. The last line in the obit. says it well for me too. "Lisa Woolverton, a life well lived; a friend well loved."

Phil:
Late Sunday I read your e-mail that honors and celebrates Lisa, the love of your life. I sat back looking at the screen and soon drifted into comforting  pensive thought. My awareness of a soething I finally understood just a few years ago was sharpened; that there are many joys in life but sharing them with another, deeply and totally, is to be especially treasured. How blessed you and I are to have found Lisa and Margaret. Margaret and I are in the habit of discussing many things at meals. Monday, at lunch, I told her of your e-mail and togrther we marveled at how precious life is, the wonder of sharing it with someone tempered by the certainty that life must end for all. We decided that is the way it is and should be  that it is after all a proper and good way. Our hearts were with you. Of course, neither of us knew Lisa well but at the reunion Lisa and I sat next to each other. We had a pleasant lively discussion. She specifically told me how it pleased her that you enjoyed showing her where your house used to be as you toured Frankfort. Margaret visited Frankfort many times and is fond of it. She no longer wants to travel. I know she attended the reunion to please me    and, as usual, enjoyed it all. We are blessed.

Lisa,
Ken and Sophie met Lisa in 1966 in Japan. Sophie met her through their teaching assignments at the Yokota AFB Elementary School; Ken met her at a social function at the Officers' Club at Johnson AFB. Lisa told Ken about another social event the following evening hosted by some other school teachers living at Johnson AFB. That is where she introduced Ken to Sophie which led to their romance and their lifelong friendship with Lisa.
In 1967 Ken left the Air Force and took a job with The Boeing Company in Seattle, Sophie took a teaching position in Seattle, and Lisa returned to her home in Seattle where she also took a teaching position. The friendship continued and was expanded to include Lisa's family and many of her friends, some becoming Ken and Sophie's lifelong friends. Holiday gatherings at the Euchner home made Ken and Sophie feel like members of the family.
In the years since Lisa moved to Texas, the friendship continued, mostly by written correspondence, but also by Lisa's yearly visits to Seattle, and Ken and Sophie's brief visit to Garland. Lisa introduced Phil and he became part of this wonderful friendship. It was always felt that the visits were too short and that longer visits would be desirable. Now Ken and Sophie realize just how short those visits were and how much they miss Lisa. She will never be forgotten.

I've thought about Lisa over the years since our ClubCorp days. My thoughts and prayers are with Phil and the rest of Lisa's family and friends.

I met Lisa and you in Golden when the Historical Marker for Mr. and Mrs. Simmons was dedicated.
Lisa was the one I worked with putting together the information on them and Harold Siimmons.  She was a beautiful person inside and out, and could put you at ease and make you feel very special.
That was the only time I actually saw her but we talked on the phone and emailed back and forth.  She was someone I loved to hear from and always felt so special when she did.
Sometimes I do not listen to my feelings, as I kept wondering why the latter part of 2010 did not hear from her and told myself she was just very busy.
At Christmas when we received her card, her handwriting looked shaky but again I told myself I was making a big thing out of it.  Now, how I wish I had either called or written her.
I will miss her so much and know you will too.  We lost our son nearly four years ago and he was the light of our lives and the loss is and was hard to accept.  What helps is that we have so many wonderful memories and all the good times and memories the two of you shared will help you.
My husband broke his hip recently and we will not be able to attend the Memorial Service on Saturday even though we would very much like to attend.
Lisa was what I called an "old soul" and you and all who knew her were blessed by knowing her.
She will be sorely missed but glad her suffering is over and she is at rest with her Heavenly Father.

My dear friend. It is hard to realize that you are gone and I won't hear your voice again, see your smile or hear 
your voice. We were friends for 56 years, having meet in 7th grade in junior high school here in Seattle. Oh, we 
had so much fun between junior high school and high school. Water skiing and snow skiing, shopping and doing what 
all young girls liked to do. You were my longest friend. I shall regret the rest of my life not coming to Texas 
to see you after I found out your were suffering. We will meet again my friend over the rainbow and once again 
will have stories to exchange and things to laugh about. Until then, auf Wiederschen my good friend.
