

Ellen Marie Carpenter Lyon, age 89 of North Dallas, TX left this Earth for Heaven peacefully of natural causes on March 15, 2026. She was blessed to share the home of niece Mary and Duncan Rogers in Anahuac, Texas the last year of her life, her loyal dog and companion Sadie by her side. She was walking and telling stories to the last day. A special mention to Roxanne who assisted at home a great deal.
Ellen was born in St Louis, Missouri on December 16, 1936 to Edmund Delaney Carpenter and Marie Gallagher Carpenter. The family relocated to Dallas, Texas. She attended grade school at Holy Trinity. She graduated high school, Class of 1954 from Ursuline Academy in Dallas. She earned an undergraduate degree from University of St. Thomas, Houston, Texas in 1958.
Ellen was married to George Lyon for 12 years from November 20, 2010 until George's passing April 30th, 2023. They met square dancing. George was the love of her life.
Ellen retired after 22 years teaching for Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD. She then spent many more years substituting. She was known as Ellen DeJean to students and associates up until her marriage with George in 2010 when she took his name.
A devout Christian, Ellen was a member of St. Monica Catholic Church in Dallas. She enjoyed square dancing and was The President, Lifetime Member, Past President, and Delegate of the Yellow Rockers Square Dance Club in Dallas. She enjoyed bowling with the Vincentian Club. Reading, traveling, and meeting new people were her passions. She told stories and never met a stranger. She adored animals and cared for more than one at a time.
Ellen is preceded in death by parents Edmund and Marie Carpenter, two brothers Eddie and John Carpenter, and her husband George Lyon. Ellen is survived by George Douglas Lyon Jr., niece Mary Rogers, nephew John Carpenter, niece Catherine Carpenter, relatives in St. Louis including the Gallagher, Rabbitt, Quigley, and Northcott families, plus many friends and loving neighbors. She is described as having been a kind and loyal friend.
Visitation will be held March 24, 2026 at 11:00 AM at Calvary Hill Chapel. Mass of Catholic Christian burial will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday March 24, 2026. Committal will follow at Calvary Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Ellen’s memory may be made to Dallas Humane Society.
