It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Gerene Higgins, a cherished individual who touched the lives of many with her kindness, warmth, and unwavering resilience. Born on November 13, 1943 in Barbados, Gerene lived a life full of passion and love. She passed away on March 4, 2025 at Medical City Hospital.
Gerene spent her formative years in Barbados and Trinidad. Growing up, Gerene developed a love of God and music, which would later become defining aspects of her character. She became a United States Citizen on September 18, 2006.
Gerene attended college and achieved an associate’s degree. She had various careers during her life. She was a counselor for Bennie Hinn Ministries and later became an ordained minister. Prior to her retirement she worked with the Richardson School District and as an Activities Director at C.C. Young Retirement Home in Dallas with a focus on “Caribbean flavored activities”.
Gerene married Gene Higgins. Gene was an accomplished musician and singer. Gerene and Gene focused on their lives together and developed a strong relationship with God, using Gene’s talents to praise the Lord. They had a daughter, Genelle, who excelled at music and dance. Genelle married Andrew Novy and they had a child, Clara. Unfortunately, Gene passed away just prior to Clara’s birth in December 2013. Gerene enjoyed spending time with Clara and assisting Genelle
Genelle passed away while Clara was still an infant. But Gerene made certain that Clara developed her talent for music through playing the piano. Gerene made a strong effort to develop a relationship with Clara and was proud of Clara’s accomplishments.
Gerene later met LeRoy “Roy” Pressley, and they married on April 4, 2021. LeRoy is a retired military veteran, and he shared Gerene’s love of God. They loved each other and enjoyed their life together. When Gerene had a stroke a few years ago that limited her activities, he took very good care of her. They were together until her untimely death.
During her life, Gerene was always active in her Church and developed a strong relationship with God. Even when she was unable to attend church due to her stroke, she made a point of spending time watching and listening to religious programming. She had many good friends she shared her faith with, especially Sister Rachel Brock, Sister Gloria Franklin, Flori Lianes and Ann Gillings.
Gerene was fortunate to have a large, extended family. She was the daughter of Edith Hacket and Emmanuel Rowans. Sister of McGregor Rowans and sister-in-law, Joan Rowans. Her cousins include Iona and Hugh Hackett (deceased), Irma Heraldo(deceased), Enez, Pamela, Esther, Albert, Ann Marie, Dianne, Eddy, Grace, Winnifred, and Sharon.
Additionally, there is her mother-in-law, Winifred Higgins, sister’s-in-law, Charmaine, Heather and Marcia. Brother’s-in-law, Acklyn, Jerry (deceased) and Roland (deceased).
Gerene’s passing leaves a void that cannot be filled, but her legacy will endure through the lives she touched. A memorial service will be held in the Chapel at Sparkman Hillcrest Funeral Home on Monday, March 17th at 2:00 PM, where friends and family will gather to celebrate Gerene’s life and honor her memory.
Special thanks and acknowledgement to Shirlene and Gihon for their kindness and support towards Sister Gerene and her family.
Rest in peace, Gerene. You will be missed more than words can express.
