Harry is survived by his sister Doris Starnes, niece Jana Bryant and her husband Rich Bryant, grandnephew Zac Carelock, his wife Katie and their daughter Carson, cousin Don Watson, and several close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Doyle and Nancy Bowman, and brother-in-law Joe Starnes.
Harry graduated from Adamson High School in Dallas in 1952. After graduation he went to work for the Dallas Morning News (DMN), where he had an exciting and successful career from which he retired 43 years later. While working at the DMN, Harry held various positions, and most notably was a critic in the Arts and Entertainment Department. His readers looked forward to his honest, humorous, and insightful articles about everything from new restaurants, food, TV shows, musicals, ballets, plays, operas, art displays, and recordings, to feature interviews with current day celebrities such as Greer Garson, Mary Tyler Moore, Dick Cavett and Mr. Peppermint, as well as reports about movie premiers, and Olympic special features from Europe and other exotic locations. He travelled the world both professionally and personally and befriended numerous celebrities, and interesting people.
Harry was a curious and avid reader who never stopped learning. He loved to cook, travel, and eat fine food. He was opinionated and didn’t hesitate to tell you his opinion and why. He was as brilliant a conversationalist, as he was a writer / journalist. Harry’s personality, quick wit, intelligence, generosity, and tender heart for victims of social or political injustice, endeared him to many.
Harry was a good son, brother, uncle, and friend. He will be dearly missed.
He loved all animals, taking in strays of all kinds as a boy, and several beloved dogs – Missy, Brooks, Brad and Kelsie - as an adult. In lieu of flowers, any donations can be made in Harry’s name to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
A special thanks to the Cedar Crest Senior Living of Lewisville residents, staff and caregivers who befriended and cared for Harry these last 3 years.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday December 18th, 2021 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Please RSVP to email: [email protected] to receive location and celebration details. We will share a taco (Harry’s favorite food – “did someone say taco?”), a margarita, and a laugh, as we remember and celebrate Harry’s life and memories.
