He was born on January 9, 1927, in Blossom, Texas. After graduating from Blossom High School in 1944, he attended junior college for one semester before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in January 1945. Harry was discharged from the Navy as a Radioman 3rd Class and placed in the Naval Reserve in July 1946.
He returned to Blossom and completed two years at Paris Junior College before enrolling at East Texas State Teachers College. Before completing his degree, Harry married Glenda Hutchinson in August 1950, after being introduced by his aunt just six months earlier. He also enrolled in the ROTC program, and upon graduation from ETSU in June 1951, he received his commission as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force.
During his distinguished Air Force career, Harry was stationed in New Mexico, Iceland, California, Okinawa, and Ohio. His assignments included work on special weapons projects, ballistic missile and reconnaissance satellite development, personnel leadership at Naha Air Base, and foreign technology research at Wright-Patterson AFB.
While in the Air Force, Harry received the Air Force Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service for his work in Okinawa and the Meritorious Service Medal for his work at Wright-Patterson AFB. In January 1970, he retired from the Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel.
After his military service, Harry returned to ETSU and earned a master’s degree in education and counseling. Beginning in 1973, he was employed by Garland ISD as a teacher and counselor until his retirement in 1992.
Harry was a man of remarkable talent and quiet strength. In retirement, he lived with the same steady focus and discipline that had defined his years of military service and teaching. He found joy in gardening and woodworking, earning 20 ribbons at the State Fair of Texas for his exceptional craftsmanship. Each piece reflected his care, precision, and pride. Even as his memory faded, his love for his family never wavered. His gentle concern and kindness shone through to the very end.
Harry leaves behind a legacy of love, craftsmanship, and integrity that will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
