

Dr. Jerome Melvin Naftalis (Mel), a loving husband, father, grandfather, devoted and cherished physician, and proud Air Force veteran, passed away peacefully on March 25, 2026, at the age of 93, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of love, compassion, and service.
Mel was born on October 13, 1932, in Philadelphia. He attended Georgetown University and Seton Hall University School of Medicine. He later moved to Dallas to complete his residency and begin his distinguished career in Internal Medicine. For more than 60 years, Mel dedicated his life to the practice of medicine, a calling he regarded as both a privilege and a profound responsibility. As an always-accessible physician, he earned the trust and gratitude of generations of patients. He was known not only for his clinical expertise, but for the way he treated every individual—with dignity, kindness, and genuine concern. His commitment to others defined his distinguished career and left a lasting imprint on all who knew him.
Mel served his country honorably as an Air Force veteran. His military service reflected the deep sense of duty, resilience, and patriotism that remained hallmarks of his character throughout his life.
Mel married Zelda Switzer in 1956, an event that he described as the quintessential joy of his life. Married for 69 years, Mel and Zelda had a robust, fulfilling, and extraordinary life together. Mel had an active, curious mind, and among his interests, he delighted in fishing, hunting, traveling, and collecting antiquities, including furniture, jewelry, and oriental rugs. Mel will be remembered for his integrity, humor, and the meaningful impact he had on both his patients and his family. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
Mel was an ever-present and devoted husband, father, and proud grandfather. He is survived by his daughter, Tracy, her husband, Eddie, and their daughter, Eliza Grace Kittle, son, Dr. Richard Naftalis, his wife, Elizabeth, and their children, Jordan, Harrison, and Benjamin Naftalis. He was predeceased by his sisters, Lori Coven and Fraida Aland.
A Memorial Service will take place at 1:00 pm, Sunday, March 29th, at Sparkman Hillcrest Funeral Home. A reception immediately following inside Sparkman Hillcrest. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Temple Shalom, Vogel Alcove, or the charity of your choice.
