On March 5th, 2026, after a brief illness and surrounded by family, Jerry Armstrong (Pops) left our world to be with his Heavenly Father. Jerry was the second youngest of 17 children born to Archie and Iona Armstrong, on August 2, 1938, in Gray Court SC.
Jerry is preceded in death by his son Jaye Armstrong, father Archie Armstrong, mother Iona Armstrong, mother In-law Grace Owens, father In-law Roy Owens, brother In-law Billy Owens, 10 Brothers, and 5 Sisters. He is survived by his bride of 68 years Jane Owens Armstrong, daughter Robbie Rogers (Husband Jeff), daughter In-law Cori Armstrong, sister Helen Gossett, granddaughter Lauren Armstrong (Fiancée Carter), grandsons Brett Rogers (Fiancée Hailee), Cameron Rogers (Wife Kelsey), Preston Armstrong, and great grand children Callum and Serena Rogers.
Jerry grew up the son of a farmer. A strong and determined work ethic was set at an early age. This would prove to be the catalyst for an exemplary transportation career. Jerry would work his way from the loading docks of Johnson Motor Lines to one day being the Chairman and CEO of one of the largest transportation conglomerates in the United States at that time. A career path that would see him make stops in Mauldin SC, Charlotte NC, Shanee KS, Pocatello ID, Denver CO, Abilene TX, and Dallas TX. His work ethic was encapsulated in an easy calm style that resonated with all that knew him and worked with him. Jerry had the ability to build confidence, passion, loyalty, and make you feel that you were the most important person in the room. This was evident by the many folks that asked to follow him at his every career stop. Throughout his career and in retirement, Jerry’s knowledge, vision and the respect of his peers, made him a sought-after board trustee for many organizations, and a mentor to many. He was also the past Chairman of the Texas motor transportation association.
Pops was an avid sports fan, and you would regularly see him watching his Texas Rangers, Dallas Mavericks, Dallas Cowboys, or Golf. Pops had the honor and enjoyment of attending 50 Masters Golf Tournaments. Jerry, Mr. Armstrong, Pops will be missed by many and remembered with reverence by all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate to a charity of your choosing in honor of Jerry/Pops. The family is planning a private ceremony.
