Jessie Lee Wedgeworth Jones was born on January 20, 1927, in Mexia, Texas, to the parents of Jesse James Wedgeworth and Savannah Lee Henry. Jessie was the oldest girl out of nine children. She went to Elementary School at B.F. Durrell and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. After graduating from Booker T. Washington, Mrs. Jones went to Tyler Junior College under a Choir Scholarship. Jessie married Freddie Jones and to this union came three children, Janet, Glenn and Larry. Nana sang in the Pilgrim Rest Choir until she was unable to drive herself to church. Jessie was a seamstress by trade and she was taught by her mother. She made clothes for all, including her children and grandchildren. Nana talked about starting back sewing up until her passing. She was also a very good cook and loved to cook for the holidays. She was the matriarch to the Wedgeworth Jones family, being a strong GOD-fearing woman who dealt with the adversities that life presented to her. She took care of her disabled daughter for over twenty-five years and she raised her daughters’ children until they were grown. She taught her family to stand for what they believed in and to treat people how they would want to be treated. She ruled her household with a firm hand, and she believed in structure. She always wanted all of her children and grandchildren to strive to be the best in everything they pursued. She made sure we went to church, so we could know the LORD our Savior for ourselves. Her strength was to be there for her family and it was never questioned. Nana sacrificed so much of herself to make sure we did not go without what we needed. As we celebrate her eighty-nine years of life, remembering the faith and strength she exuded in her life. On July 8, 2016 in Dallas, Texas, Mrs. Jessie Lee Wedgeworth Jones was welcomed to her eternal home, with opened arms by her parents, Savannah and Jesse Wedgeworth; siblings, Bernall Wedgeworth, Willie Hugh Wedgeworth, Richard “Jug” Wedgeworth and Robert “Bob” Wedgeworth; her daughter, Janet M. Jones Pruitt; and son, Glenn Everett Jones, Sr. Nana’s life and legacy will always be remembered by her son, Larry Steven Jones, Sr.; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; three sisters, Ora Hill, La Vern Brooks and Peggy Nelson; and one brother, Audre “Dee” Wedgeworth; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
