Jim was born on December 3, 1951, in Bardwell, Kentucky, to Jimmy Len and Alice Mae (Goodman) Flegle. He was a 1974 graduate of the University of Kentucky where he was President of the Student Body, a member of Phi Beta Kappa and inducted into UK’s Debate Hall of Fame. Jim credited debate as one of the pillars of his success and he recently honored his former debate coach by establishing the J.W. Patterson Foundation for Academic Excellence in Speech and Debate.
Jim was also a 1977 graduate of the University of Virginia School of Law where he and his future law partner, Tommy Melo, won first place in the William Minor Lile Moot Court competition. Jim was also a member of the Raven Society (the law school’s oldest honor society), a recipient of the Stephen P. Traynor Prize and a dedicated and loyal supporter of the law school’s Foundation.
After law school, Jim moved to Houston, Texas, to join Bracewell and Patterson, LLP where he was a partner in the litigation section and a member of the firm-wide management committee. In 1994 Jim was asked to move to Dallas, Texas, to serve as managing partner of Bracewell’s newly-opened office. That move was fortuitous for Jim because it was in Dallas that he met his wife, best friend and life partner of 27 years, Ophelia Camiña.
In 2002, Jim left Bracewell to form Loewinsohn Flegle, LLP where he continued his practice as a commercial litigator until he retired from the practice of law in 2021. During his long career, Jim was frequently recognized by Texas SuperLawyers, Best Lawyers in America and Best Lawyers in Dallas. Jim was also a proud member of the American Board of Trial Advocates and was privileged to serve as President of Dallas ABOTA in 2009. Jim’s success in the courtroom and in life was rooted in his early formation as a true Southern gentleman. Jim was gracious, kind, witty and charming; his colleagues, neighbors and friends will all miss Jim’s calm demeanor, self-effacing humor and welcoming smile.
Jim loved to travel and successfully made it to all seven continents, but he never left without his UVA hat, his camera and at least 20 pounds of camera lens -- just to capture that single precious moment of beauty. While he traveled the world, Jim was most at home in his beloved Colorado where he spent as much time as he could basking in the splendor of the Rocky Mountains. Jim was a man of great faith and many talents – he was a Sunday School teacher, a certified Pilates instructor, a voracious reader and a lover of baseball. But what he cherished most was attending and cheering for his kids at sporting, dance, music or academic events, sometimes appearing with a very loud cowbell.
In early 2021, Jim was diagnosed with Diffuse Large B-cell lymphoma and by recent accounts he was declared cancer-free. However, he went in for a surgery to remove necrotic tissue left from the cancer, went into sepsis and died within a few hours. True to his values, Jim hung on long enough so that his kids could be there with him. He passed peacefully, surrounded by family, prayer and love.
In addition to his wife and children, Jim is survived by his sister, Karen Hobbs (husband Greg), his brother, Mark Flegle (wife Beverly), his son-in-law Brock MacLean, grandchildren Casey and Cole MacLean, and his many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles.
