

Joan Culwell, born Jeanne d’Arc Huot on June 19, 1923, in Sanford, Maine, died peacefully on April 14, 2014, in Dallas, Texas. As a young woman during World War II, Joan drove across the country to Los Angeles where she met Leslie B. Culwell, a lieutenant in the United States Navy. The couple married in 1946 and moved to Texas, where they raised two children, Elizabeth and William Culwell. Throughout her life, Joan was a dedicated mother and a devout Catholic, participating in religious studies/activities in church communities in West Texas and later at Saint Pius X in Dallas. She was also a dance enthusiast. Hits from the Glenn Miller band typically produced jitterbug moves from her. While a member of the former White Rock Senior Center, she participated in dance exhibitions throughout Dallas. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie Culwell, and is survived by daughter Liz Walters and son-in-law Michael Walters of New Canaan, CT, and Bill Culwell of Austin, TX. Grandchildren include Jonathan Walters and his wife, Elise Walters, of Pound Ridge, NY; Amanda Walters of NYC; Garrett Culwell, Dallas; Simone Culwell, Honolulu, Hawaii. Joan has one great-grandchild, Baby Jack Walters, 5 months in age. A Funeral Mass was held April 16, 2014, 1:30 p.m., at Saint Pius X in Dallas. Internment, 1:30 p.m., April 17, 2014, Hope Cemetery in Henrietta, Texas. We will all miss our kooky, funny, crazy, lovely, sweet Nana!!
