Joan Sargent Jenson passed away Thursday night, October 26, 2023. Loving wife, daughter, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend, Joan was a blessing to those who knew her. She was known for her beautiful smile, thoughtful presence and generous heart. She was intelligent, strong, the matriarch of our family. Yet, she was humble, patient, and kind. She took time to listen, to send a card, to bake a meal, to comfort another. As a mother, she loved unconditionally, was supportive and focused on strengths, not flaws. Joan loved her family and treasured time with them. The Sargent home was host to countless holiday meals and Sunday brunches with grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. She set a wonderful example of how to live life fully with strong faith. Joan attended daily mass at Blessed Sacrament in Wichita and then St. Patrick when she moved to Dallas in early 2019.
Joan was born in Nashville Tn, December 21, 1930, to Margaret and Nestor R Weigand Sr. and grew up in Wichita Ks. She graduated St. Mary’s High School, attended the University of Kansas and Wichita State University. In 1951 she married James W Sargent Jr. and raised five children. Her life can best be described as “servant leader” whether it be to her family or community. Joan’s numerous volunteer activities included Election Board, Community Planning Council, Pre-School for the Blind, American Cancer Society, Blessed Sacrament, Monican Circle, Altar Society and Wichita Junior League.
In 1955 Joan started Operation Holiday and was the Organizing President and in 1961 she was on the Executive Committee. In 1964, she was the Co-Organizer of Jr. Great Books for the Catholic Diocese and Jr Great Books Leader at Blessed Sacrament the next year. After serving in several different placements, holding several different committee chairmanships and offices, Joan was also the President of the Wichita Junior League in 1965.
In 1978, while still maintaining her volunteer commitments, Joan began a new career in the family business at JP Weigand & Son. As a Realtor, Joan enjoyed a successful career helping others find their dream homes. In 1991, Joan lost her husband of nearly 40 years, James W. Sargent Jr., to lung cancer. She married Dr. Bill Jenson (d. 11-26-2020), in 1994. Joan is preceded in death by her daughter Mary Kathryn Sargent (d. 9-21-58); parents, Margaret Cain Weigand and Nestor R Weigand Sr.; brother, Michael C Weigand; sister, Kathryn W Greenleaf. She is survived by 5 children: Jim (Karen), Dave (Jane), Pat (Monica), Kay Allen (Joe), Annie Ideker (Curtis); brother, Nestor R. Weigand, Jr.; 14 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. We are grateful for the wonderful care she received from the staff at The Tradition on Lover’s Lane while she was in Memory Care and from her personal care partners, Victoria, Mesuo, Pearl and Mercy. We are also grateful for the care of All Star Hospice.
Her presence is missed. Her essence endures.
Visitation will be 4 – 5pm Sunday, 11/5/2023, with a Rosary 4:30pm at Sparkman-Crane Funeral Home. Her Funeral Mass will be Monday, November 6, 2023 at 10am at St Patrick Catholic Church, Dallas, Texas. Interment will follow in Wichita, Kansas at Old Mission Cemetery.
