John was born March 5,1931 in Cleburne, Texas to James and Ora Gaither. John was the youngest of four children. His siblings were half-brother, Minot B, and sisters, Jimmie Thelma and Opal Grace. All of whom have passed before John. John’s family moved to the Oak Cliff section of Dallas when he was a young boy where he completed his studies at Sunset High School. Following high school, he worked briefly for the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas before joining the Navy and serving on the U.S.S. Seminole in the Korean War. Following the war, John's naval service took him to Ford Island, Honolulu, Hawaii which more than made up for the freezing weather during the war. After leaving the Navy, John returned to Dallas and began a 33 year career with Republic Bank.
John enthusiastically retired at the age of 55 and loved every minute of his 28 years of retirement. He traveled throughout the world and drove just about every road in the United States and Canada. John is most remembered for his high opinion of fun. As his many, many friends know, he loved life and reveled in all its gifts to the fullest. He was a charmer and a devil all rolled into one. If you met John you would be hard pressed to forget him. He is survived by his best friend of more than 50 years, C.W. Williams, Jr. of Shreveport, Louisiana and an amazing number of friends who loved him very much. All will miss John, a true force of nature. He made so many, so very happy.
In lieu of a funeral, John has requested a celebration of his life. Details will be forthcoming.
