His father was a naval officer resulting in frequent moves by the family. His favorite memories from his childhood were spent on the family farm in Sweeny, Texas with his grandparents, 10 uncles and an aunt. This is where he said he developed the strong work ethic he demonstrated throughout his career. His family also spent two years living at the Naval Base at Guantanamo, Cuba where he and his friends were invited to play baseball with the sailors in port. This experience resulted in his lifelong love of the sport. John graduated from Texas A&M Consolidated High School in College Station. After his enlistment in the Army Reserves and the death of his brother, James, in Viet Nam, John moved to Flagstaff, Arizona where his father was then an accounting professor at Northern Arizona University. He received a B.A. degree in Economics there in 1972. He attended the Graduate School of Business at University of Texas in Austin. He was recruited by Arthur Anderson and became audit manager of some of the largest engagements including the Cullum Company (Tom Thumb), Halliburton and General Dynamics. John was a Certified Public Accountant, a member of the Texas Society of Public Accountants, a member of the A.I.C.P.A., and the National Association of Bankruptcy Trustees. In the mid-80s, John established what is now the well-respected accounting firm of Litzler, Segner, Shaw and McKenney, specializing in bankruptcy, restructuring, tax, accounting and litigation support. In 1989, John began his 27-year service to the Department of Justice - United States Trustee as a member of the Chapter 7 Trustee Panel. He has also served as Trustee and Plan Trustee for a variety of Chapter 11 cases in Northern District of Texas. John performed extensive investigative work throughout the United States and has been a private consultant for oil and gas, real estate and service related bankruptcies. He has been qualified and has served as an expert witness in various courts and has served as a consultant for the United States Trustee and various Creditors’ Committees. He developed many strong and lasting friends during his career that remained by his side throughout his illness.
John married the love of his life, Nancy, on June 9, 2006. Together they shared many happy times especially with their children Samuel Litzler II (wife, Julia), Lauren Pardue (husband, Jerad) and grandson Kane. They traveled often to their favorite places: Vancouver, B.C.; San Francisco, Sedona, AZ; Nevis, West Indies; and their home in Florida. Their last trip was to San Antonio where John participated in a men’s cancer retreat sponsored by Reel Recovery. John is also survived by his brother Lee Litzler (wife Lilia), sister Dr. Patricia Rogers (husband Todd); many nieces and nephews and his beloved dog Murray and cat Heidi.
John loved all animals and his best days began walking his dog on the Katy Trail.

A deep sense of gratitude goes out to all of the family and friends who supported John and Nancy through these difficult times. A memorial service celebrating John’s life will be on Tuesday, June 21 at 10:00 a.m. at Sparkman-Hillcrest.
