

John was preceded in death by his parents John H. Smith Sr. and Alma Nancy Smith; his loving wife of 53 years, Betty Smith. He is survived by his son, Steven Allen Smith and his wife Anita of Frankston, Texas; grandson, John Henry Smith of Frankston, Tx; granddaughter, Leslie Smith Derrick and husband Kenny of Texas City, Tx; 4 great grandchildren; his special friend and square dance partner of 15 years, Mary Hardin.
John was a member of Skillman Ave. Church of Christ since 1957. He served in the United States Navy during WWII. After 34 years, John retired as a Shop Foreman for Lone Star Cadillac in Dallas. John had a passion for building toys. He spent 15 years at Hobby Crafters building toys for under privileged children. John loved square dancing and spent 63 years dancing all over the world. He was still dancing in October of 2016. He was a Shriner for 56 years, a leader in the Boy Scouts, and he worked for the food pantry. John led a full life but still found time to fish at White Rock Lake in Dallas.
Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, April 6, 2017 in the Sparkman Crane chapel. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, April 7, 2017 in the Sparkman Crane chapel with burial following the service at Grove Hill cemetery.
